this is the most anyone’s ever paid attention to her ramblings. she’d be flattered, if she didn’t know it was purely for scholarly research. they seem so interested in the history and core mechanics of video games, and it’s something she’s studied her entire life, so... she’d be some kind of monster if she didn’t deliver, right?
(it’s definitely not because this is the first time anyone has ever made her feel like she’s actually allowed to talk at length about her interests.)
chiaki scratches her chin. it takes her a moment to comprehend what shinguuji’s said, as she picks apart their words and then rephrases them in her head so she understands what’s being asked.
“um... it’s not really something that’s acknowledged in-universe, y’know? it’s mostly because when games were first created, they didn’t have the ability to maintain save files like we currently have. so if you lost once, and you didn’t have any more lives, you’d have to start over from your last checkpoint... or start over completely, if you go back far enough. and for most people, that would be a deal breaker... retro games are suuuper hard, apparently.”
“apparently”, because she hasn’t had much difficulty with ANY game since she was a little kid.
