“This is only my third drink,” Glenda promised, laughter in her voice as she sipped on her cocktail. “And anyway, I’m allowed to have as many as I like on my birthday.” Of course, her birthday had come and gone by this point, but tonight had been her first opportunity to go out and celebrate following her weekend trip.

This is way better than before the storm hit. The past couple of days whenever she’s tried to get out of her bed she’s ended up giving up or meowing at me for help. 

I understand she’s got arthritis that’s worsening and she’s not going to be a young kitty anymore.  It’s still difficult to see this change, though. It’s so hard to avoid comparing past Diva with current Diva. I have to stop myself because the important thing is that she isn’t depressed. She still grooming herself where she can reach. She still interested in me and Unfriendly. And food. I get yelled at for food daily. 

I don’t think she sees herself in terms that humans would in lamenting her own decline so it’s unfair for me to feel sad to where she feels that sadness and gets distressed. Diva has always tried to comfort me whenever I’m sad and if I’m crying, she grooms me like I’m a kitten. 

Unfriendly commented that she’s been fortunate since we found her near the dumpsters on the grounds of our first apartment 19 years ago. I don’t know if either of us really thought about how she would age because she’s always been so resilient.
