I love making my own lotion- it always smells nice, it’s never greasy, and I can always pronounce every ingredient used to make it! It’s not too difficult to do either! Here’s my recipe in case you want to try from home yourself 😘 6 oz (3/4 cup) Raw Unrefined Shea Butter 4 oz (8 TBSP) Carrier Oil such as Vitamin E, Jojoba, or Coconut 50 to 100 drops (1/2 to 1 tsp) Essential Oil 6 tsp (2 TBSP) Corn Starch* 1 TBSP of witch hazel solution (optional) To prepare shea butter for whipping, it must first be heated on a double boiler and then strained through a mesh sieve lined with cheese cloth. Refrigerate for about an hour, if the shea butter becomes too hard, let it sit on the counter for 20 minutes to soften. Using either an electric mixer or a stand mixer, place 6 oz Shea Butter into non-porous mixing bowl, beat on medium for one minute. Add the Carrier Oil and Essential Oil, whip 1 minute on medium, 2 minutes on high, scraping down the bowl as necessary. If adding witch hazel solution, add at this time, mix on low speed for 1 minute, medium speed for 1 minute more to thoroughly combine. Add cornstarch 1 tsp at a time and beat on high for 1 minute, scraping down bowl between each addition. The volume of the lotion should roughly triple in size; using spatula, transfer to two 8-oz containers. For cleanup, rinse bowl and tools down with very hot water. For dishwashers, run cycle as for greasy items. For hand wash, adding baking soda to the dish soap will fight the grease effectively. *I like adding cornstarch because I find that it helps to dissolve any lumps in my lotion, and provides a silky finish after applying. You can also substitute similar starches such as arrowroot powder, tapioca starch, or even very finely powdered oatmeal, though I can only personally vouch for the measurements and results of the corn starch.
