"By tomorrow morning, the kingdom will be yours."
He could hear the seagulls calling to one another on the beach that surrounded part of the Asgardian palace. The sun was shining through the balcony, warming Frederick’s chambers. They had arrived through the portal weeks ago--he and his elder sister, at least. Joanna hadn’t been interested in returning, and Freya..well, his twin didn’t trust him. The distrust was well deserved, but that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt him. Ingrid, however...Ingrid was the one to search to figure out how to re-open the portal, allowing Frederick to return to the only home he had ever known...Midgard wasn’t really a home to him, the way it was to Ingrid. Which was why it was all the more surprising that she came through with him. And stayed.
But his sister was always surprising him. It had been that way since they were young. Suddenly, he realized he had been sitting on the soft, plush sofa. Staring at her while in thought. Right. His coronation tomorrow. It was his job to rebuild the kingdom after his grandfather tore it to shreds.
“...Yes, I suppose it will be.” He finally said, tilting his head up to look at her. “But only in name, Ingrid. The kingdom..” Emotion took over his voice as he turned his head, gazing out at the sea. Finally the sea was peace. “..The kingdom, it will always be a home for you, Ingrid.” He turned back towards her, green eyes sincere. “I hope you know that...If you had been raised here--if the curse wasn’t ever cast...you’d be wearing the crown tomorrow. I never expected it to be me.”
