Made a baby smash cake and cupcakes yesterday for a friends son. Fiddly considering I could use no sugar (honey was ok) and no artificial colors. Cake was banana and organic cinnamon apple sauce, frosting was cream cheese, honey, heavy whipping cream, and the brown was achieved with cocoa butter and almond butter. (Adult cupcakes were more traditional banana chocolate chip with buttercream flavored with almond butter and cocoa powder. Not my prettiest work, but I think they turned out fairly cute.

Stella's 1st birthday party is today. I've always wanted to try my hand at the style of Highland cow, so imagine my delight when my stepdaughter told me the theme was cow.

I'm having a lovely day. I baked a stuffed crescent braid (eggs, bacon and cheese) not pictured.. conducted a chocolate chip cookie experiment (see below the fold for test and results) and snipped some hydrangea from my garden. Tonight I will grill things and maybe have some fire pit time if I don't pass out first

Youngest girl kid and I conducted a baking experiment with us and the boys as our taste testers. We tried 3 different variations of chocolate chip cookies - testing combos of white and brown sugars and all butter, all butter-flavored crisco and butter/crisco combined. Then further tested baking each dough batch 3 ways on airbake, regular cookie sheet with baking spray, and on a cookie sheet with silpat. The spray produced the best crisp, and the butter crisco kept the cookies from spreading so the chew-to-crisp was better. Overall, the half crisco/half butter on silpat (using both white and brown sugar) gave the best overall texture, and the all butter-flavored crisco with all brown sugar on a cookie sheet with spray gave the best flavor and best crispy to chewy ratio and was my overall favorite.
