Sheet Glass Aluminium Mirror

A sheet glass aluminium mirror refers to anodized aluminum sheets taking on a mirror effect after being treated by a variety of methods such as rolling, grinding etc. Usually made into sheets or rolls to meet differed application, it’s also known as polished aluminum sheet, mirror finish anodized aluminum sheet, reflective aluminum sheet etc. At present there are three levels of surface polish available for sheet glass aluminium mirrors: 800 standard polish, 850 high polish and 890 super polish. In accordance with surface processing methods, the mirror can be divided into two types: oxidized polish sheets and unoxidized polished sheets.

5 things you didn’t know about…sheet glass

‘Today, more than half of the global ceramics market is glass products, and 30% of this is sheet glass.’

1. In Roman times, casting was employed to make window glass. Molten glass was poured into a bed of sand, allowed to cool slightly and then pulled at the edges to form a rectangular sheet.

2. Sheet glass is soda-lime silicate, which typically consists of silica sand (72% weight), limestone, soda ash, alumina hydrate and burnt dolomite.

3. Sir Alastair Pilkington and Kenneth Bickerstaff first developed the flat process in 1959 in the UK. It involves feeding molten glass between rollers onto a bath of molten tin (melting temperature is 232°C) at about 1,000°C. At the exit of the bath, the temperature is reduced to 600°C, it is then slowly cooled and stresses are relieved.

4. The Crystal Palace, London consisted of about 300,000 panes of glass. The sheets were each 130 x 25cm –the biggest made at the time. Today, the record is held by an 800cm-diameter mirror made by Schott for a telescope.

5. Pilkington also developed a self-cleaning glass, applying a 15nm coating of titanium dioxide using chemical vapour deposition. The coating has two properties that contribute to the cleaning process – it is photocatalytic and hydrophilic.
