the stars of YARDIE
2018 London/Jamaica based revenge film directed by Idris Elba
Black Film of the Week: YARDIE (2018)
Director: Idris Elba. With Aml Ameen, Shantol Jackson, Sheldon Shepherd, Everaldo Cleary, Naomi Ackie, and Stephen Graham At a time when the world is getting smaller and the African diaspora is getting more interconnected, it’s helpful to learn the story of how one of many Caribbean black people ended up in Great Britain, and impacted the country’s racial makeup and entertainment culture.
Whilst this film is a story about how one man’s revenge-motivated decisions lead him and others down a tragic and dangerous path, the film - based on Victor Headley’s novel “Yardie” - is also set amidst the bombastic and rich sounds of reggae’s music roots in London and the Jamaicans who live and don’t live there, giving us a glimpse into the 1980’s Black immigrant experience.
Couple this British crime drama with standout performances by its lead Aml Ameen, and prime Jamaican actors Shantol Jackson and Sheldon Shepherd, and you have a modern classic brought to the screen by first-time director (and dreamboat) Idris Elba.
You can find “Yardie” on Amazon Prime.

Don't Cry for Jamaica
Did you ever meet someone that made you go “Wow!”? Well, it happened to me a couple of times and again today. I was about to shoot a group photo of the organisation of “Read my world”, an international literature festival in Amsterdam, when I met this guy. His name is Sheldon Shepherd and he’s a dub-poet, musician, lead singer of the band No-Madzz and actor from Jamaica.
I can elaborate on his whole persona, but that would cost me some extra GB on my monthly website bill, so we’ll just stick to the pictures for now:
