The Moon and Sixpence
Shengwang’s mother loves the moon and she asked Shengwang’s father whether he will choose the moon or sixpence. Shengwang’s father said he will choose six pence because the moon is too far away and six pence is closer (to reality).
Shengwang’s mother said that she hopes that for her, Shengwang can choose the moon. In Shengwang’s mother context, the moon represents her and sixpence represents life/career/materialistic pursuits. Shengwang’s father chose sixpence because he didn’t understand what his wife meant (about the question) and probably didn’t truly understand what she desires. But when Shengwang told Jiangtian the story, Jiangtian said he will choose the moon. Jiangtian understood the underlying meaning of the question and why Shengwang’s mother wants Shengwang to choose the moon. And Jiangtian is telling Shengwang “I choose you” when he said he chose the moon. Unfortunately, Shengwang didn’t fully understand what Jiangtian meant.
