Sega has just confirmed a new Shenmue 1 & 2 collection by unveiling a brand new trailer during SEGA PES 2018 in Tokyo:

Updated versions of the first two games in the series will be released by Deep Silver as a single package on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. (Yes, you read that correctly: there will be an Xbox One version, despite the same publisher's Shenmue 3 by Ys Net launching on PS4 and PC only.)

The new collection will allow players to select between Japanese or English audio, as well as between original or new control schemes.

This announcement marks the conclusion of the #SaveShenmueHD campaign, which has been running since 2015 following the successful crowdfunding of Shenmue 3. We will have a lot more to say on this soon, including details of where we go from here as an organized community that congregates on Twitter every 3rd of the month. But for now, we are taking a short break! We'll see you back here in a week or so. As we recently mentioned, Sega will be hosting a two-day event this weekend in Tokyo, with fan engagement and special announcements.

Stoking the hype and the inevitable #SaveShenmueHD speculation are today's tweets by Sega themselves and the French arm of Koch Media (which owns Shenmue III publisher Deep Silver).

A primary school for underprivileged children in Guilin, China, has recently received a donation of 166 books, paid for by Chinese fans of the Shenmue series of video games partly set in the remote area.

It's the latest chapter in a remarkable story that began during Shenmue III's Kickstarter campaign in 2015. Two American brothers volunteering at the elementary school donated substantial personal funds to the crowdfunding appeal, hoping to use the associated perks to draw wider attention to the school and its needs.

Before such rewards could even be finalized, media coverage of their intentions caught the eyes of the Chinese Shenmue fan community, which set about honoring the brothers' contributions to the game by donating equipment and materials to the school.

In December of that year, 200 books were delivered to the young children, followed in May 2016 by a brand new projector. One fundamental snag, however: the school's bare external windows made the classroom too bright to see the projections - so by the end of the year fans had also donated curtains!

The latest donation of a further 166 books really highlights the scale of compassion and generosity inspired by Yu Suzuki's Shenmue saga, with a fan community so committed to giving these kids in Guilin a better start in life.

Three weeks before the unveiling of new Shenmue III content by Yu Suzuki at MAGIC 2018, fans took to Twitter yesterday to keep up the public demand for Sega to remaster Shenmue 1 & 2 in time for the new game's release.

In the past, whenever Sega teased any kind of announcement or new game reveal, they could always count on Shenmue fans to hope against hope, speculating whether Shenmue III's day had come.

Now that Yu Suzuki has taken the task of Shenmue III into his own hands, Sega might have thought they'd washed theirs of this tradition. Alas, there's still the trifling matter of Shenmue 1 & 2 remasters, which they are repeatedly said to be "investigating" while fans nervously count down the months to the sequel, whose success may be influenced by newcomers' ability to play the original chapters first.

So when Sega's American and European social media teams yesterday posted a cryptic picture of a lightbulb and a date two weeks in the future, they immediately found themselves on the receiving end of tweets bearing the hashtag #SaveShenmueHD. Whether seeing a tenuous link to the series or none at all, fans wanted to remind the company that demand for those remasters of Shenmue 1 & 2 is still strong.

It didn't take long for information to surface that pointed to this teaser being related to an upcoming sim game by Two Point Studios - unrelated to Shenmue, just as so many red herrings had been over the years. But it was the persistence of Shenmue fans through each of those disappointments that ensured the franchise would one day live on, and it's our hope that the same will hold true for Shenmue HD.

With less than three weeks to go until Gamescom, yesterday's #SaveShenmueHD Tweetathon was the last collective opportunity for Shenmue fans to appeal to Sega's better nature and request they announce remasters of the first two games at this event in Cologne, Germany.

With a confirmed appearance by the legendary Yu Suzuki to not only present Ys Net's upcoming sequel to the media, but also meet with fans on the show floor, there'll scarcely be a better environment for Sega to publicly commit to releasing new versions of the original chapters before Shenmue 3 arrives on PC and PlayStation 4 next year.

And with that motivation in your hearts, you certainly brought the Hazuki tiger spirit to Thursday's occasion, pounding the campaign hashtag in a united display unmatched by any other gaming community.

The latest Shenmue 3 update from Ys Net officially unveils a new logo for the game, and provides a sneak peak at more of the new characters we can expect to meet on Ryo's journey.

The update also reveals that the team will attend the Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany (August 22-26), where they plan to share their latest movie clips, news, and even some new announcements.

Ys Net has released a new update on the Shenmue 3 project via Kickstarter and the game's official website.

It includes a video giving us our first look at a new character from the highly anticipated sequel, as the 3D model is put through its paces to test for imperfections.

With so much work going into every detail of the game, the update also confirms that resources aren't being set aside for an E3 presentation.

As much as we'd all like to be blown away by a big new trailer - just as an exclusive group of backers were in September last year, when they were shown footage already months old at the time yet leaps and bounds ahead of anything yet revealed in public - we are perfectly content for Yu Suzuki and his crew to maintain their trademark secrecy until nearer the game's release, when its impact will be fresh in gamers' minds come launch day. For now, the time required to prepare and polish a trailer for mainstream consumption is best spent perfecting the game itself.

As fans our attention at E3 can now focus entirely on Sega, who must seize the moment to announce remasters of Shenmue 1 & 2. The perfect appetizer for fans, and even moreso for newcomers to the series, the sooner these original chapters are available to buy on modern systems the better.
