Shepard Fairey to have major exhibition in hometown Charleston, S.C. By David Ng, latimes.com Los Angeles street artist Shepard Fairey and New York art titan Jasper Johns come from different sides of the country and the contemporary art world, but they are similar in at least one respect: They both hail from South Carolina. The artists will be the subject of a retrospective starting in May in Fairey's hometown of Charleston coinciding with the 2014 Spoleto Festival. The exhibition, "The Insistent Image: Recurrent Motifs in the Art of Shepard Fairey and Jasper Johns," will feature new work by Fairey and a survey of prints by Johns from 1982 to 2012. Organizers said it will be Fairey's first major exhibition in Charleston, where he was born in 1970. The show is scheduled to run from May 22 to July 5 at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston. The exhibition will feature work from Fairey's series "Power & Glory," which organizers described as "a celebration and critique of Americana with an emphasis on the meanings of power." In addition, the street artist will create a series of public murals in Charleston in conjunction with the show. Johns was born in Georgia and grew up around South Carolina. Organizers said this exhibition will bring the artists together for the first time in their home state. The Spoleto Festival USA is set to run from May 23 to June 8 at venues around Charleston.
