History was repeating itself only this time the pain was a thousand times worse when he stood here with Abby ready to watch her walk through the doors he had begun what it felt like to love someone with all he had, now he was watching the love of his life leave him behind.
Buck knew Eddie had to do this he had to get Christopher back. Eddie wasn't whole without his son, and Buck couldn't be selfish and beg Eddie to stay, to not leave LA.
To not leave him.
"I have something for you."
Eddie’s soft voice pulled Buck back from his spiraling thoughts as memories of him saying goodbye to Abby flashed before his eyes.
"You didn't have to get me anything."
The smile Eddie gave him was the one Buck had come to realize was the one Eddie only gave to him. "I know I didn't, but I wanted to." Reaching out, Eddie pulled up Buck's hand and placed something metal in his palm.
It took Buck only a second to realize what it was. He knew his blue eyes were full of shock, disbelief, and hope as he met Eddie’s. "Your St. Christopher medal? I don't understand."
Carefully cupping Buck’s hand in both of his Eddie rested his forehead against Buck's. "This is my promise to you that I will come back for you. I will be back with Christopher as soon as I can. But until I can be, I want you to wear this, so a piece of me is here watching your back and keeping you safe."
He couldn't tell Buck that he loves him, not when he is leaving him but he could give him a symbol of his love for him and remind Buck that he is and will forever be in Eddie and Christopher hearts and part of their family.
He's glad that Hen has someone watching her back. Someone they can trust. He worked for months without having Eddie watching his back. At his side. But Ravi and he work well together. So what if he and Eddie don't seem to have time to hang out together as much as they used to? He was busy moving into his new place, helping out Maddie. Being there for Athena as much as she would let him, and hanging out with Harry who seemed to be taking an interest in being a firefighter.
It couldn't last forever eventually everyone leaves him. Eddie just stayed the longest, but in the end, even he wouldn't stay. Buck was the one who foolishly hoped that Eddie would be the one to stay forever. That he would want Buck to stay.
He wishes Maddie had never made him realize he is in love with Eddie Diaz, because it is slowly killing him to realize that Eddie will never love him back.

It couldn’t be real. There was no way that this could be true, and if it was, it was breaking her heart into pieces. She hadn't felt this kind of pain since that day in the kitchen when he broke her heart. She had been so certain that with time he would realize that what they had was a love meant to be and that they would have a fairytale ending.
From the moment Ana Flores had laid eyes on Edmundo Diaz, she knew that he was the only man for her. He was perfect in every way. They would make a perfect couple. For moments, she had her dream life.
She knew that one day she would be Mrs Edmundo Diaz; she would be a wonderful mother to Christopher. Heaven knows the boy needed one, what with his mother running away only to leave them ago before she was tragically killed; she was certain that once Christopher accepted his limitations, he would be a wonderful big brother to hers and Edmundo's healthy children they would soon have. A single tear rolled down Ana's cheek as she glanced towards the wedding binder she had between her books on the bookshelf.

On ao3
Look, Hen loves her boys; they are her family, and she would kick anyone's ass if someone tried to harm them, but that didn't mean that they don't get on her nerves as well.
Like Eddie was right now.
Eddie refused to admit that he wanted to melt. "He's a grown man, how can he look so adorable in a pink scarf?"
From the moment Buck had proudly shown off the pink scarf that he had knitted thanks to Isabel's teachings, it was all that Eddie could go on about, especially when Buck wore it.
Hen found it adorable and was so proud of Buck now that he was teaching Mara, who had begged to learn from him. It was no secret that Buck was weak for children, especially the ones of the 118th, and he had been trying to find a way to do something with Mara. Watching the two of them together was sweet. Even if it did leave Eddie a pile of goo on her kitchen floor. Buck had even bought child-safe needles for Jee after she pouted about wanting to join in the fun that her uncle and big sister were having.
"I'm not sure, but I am certain that you will start to tell me, Edmundo."
Eyes wide, Eddie whirled around to face Hen, "Look at him." He gestured to where Buck was giving Mara his full focus, even with Jee hanging off the back of him with a princess crown nestled safely in his curls. "He is so good with them all. He is going to be a great dad."
Lying a hand on Eddie's arm, Hen smiled at him, "He already is to Christopher. The two of you did a great job in raising that boy." She spoke from the heart.
"Thank you. We had our close calls with Helena hiring that Kim woman hoping that the sight of her would trigger a mental break to take custody of Christopher." Eddie shivered as he recalled meeting the woman who looked exactly like Shannon. He had run to Buck before he did something stupid and started secretly seeing her. It was his dad, of all people, who called him to let him know what his mother had done. Apparently, it was the straw that broke the camel's back, and his dad left Helena and moved to LA.
Hen's eyes were soft. "You, too, have faced so much in this past year; you both deserve to be happy."
Then there was Tommy, who admitted to Buck that he was the second choice. He had tried to date Eddie first, but when it became clear that Eddie wasn't interested, he found Buck handsome enough to date. He learned quickly why you don't treat Athena Grant-Nash's adopted son like that.
Then they nearly lost Bobby, but his golden blood saved him from that super virus.
Then they both managed to gain a stalker, Alex, who became obsessed with Eddie after they worked a few scenes together. Dwayne, whom Buck had shown compassion towards, had become obsessed with him. The two had met during one of Dwayne's therapy meetings and had become friends in their obsessions with Buck and Eddie. Their kidnapping had been horrifying, and held by the two people who decided that they belonged to them had reminded them how short life really was.
It had been a scary time.
But it had also forced them to acknowledge what is between them.
It had surprised no one when Buck and Eddie skipped dating and went straight to getting engaged and then married within two months of declaring their love for one another.
As if sensing that Eddie was talking about him, Buck's blue eyes zeroed in on him, and his face lit up with a smile that could outshine the sun.
Every time Buck smiled at him, Eddie felt himself drowning in the warmth of Buck's light.
"Oh, go kiss your boy already." Hen gave him a push, "I can't take the heart-eyes any longer."
Flashing a smile at Hen, Eddie didn't need to be told twice.
"UNCLE EDDIE!" Jee shirked as Eddie drew closer, and Eddie was thankful that he was prepared as she launched herself at him.
Climbing to his feet, Buck smiled at Eddie, "Hi, handsome."
"Hello, mi sol." Eddie closed the distance between them and kissed Buck softly on the lips.
Mara and Jee both giggled.
Pulling apart, Eddie smiled at Buck, "Just think, in a few more months, we will be dads to our own little girl."
When Adriane had offered to be their surrogate, Buck had cried as he hugged her. Everyone who knows Buck knows that he has always wanted to be a dad. Christopher had made it clear that he saw Buck as his dad and that he couldn't wait to be a big brother.
"Just a few more months," Buck whispered. Their little girl's room was already done, and Buck had been working with Mara on finishing up the first baby blanket. It was a soft lilac that Jee had deemed it had to be; Eddie and Christopher had backed her up. While Buck had been making the baby blanket, Eddie and Christopher had taken Christopher's old crib, which had been Eddie's and restored it for their newest member. Christopher had also taken great joy in being a task master to ordering his dad around in setting up the nursery. Buck had been so proud that he bought Christopher his own clipboard.
Buck couldn't wait to see Eddie holding their little girl in his arms, humming to her softly as he danced around the room.
Pressing a kiss on Buck's birthmark, Eddie couldn't wait to see Buck holding their daughter in his arms. She would be so tiny as he talks to her, telling her all the facts he knows.
"Come on, let's go home so I can show you how much I love you in that pink scarf," Eddie growled out.
Buck swallowed hard, "Right, girls, let's get you back to your parents." He loved wearing this scarf; it drove Eddie wild.
Two Months Later
Buck was still wearing his pink scarf, only this time it wasn't to tease his husband. It was a special moment; they were finally bringing their little girl home.
Lillian Ashley Diaz was safely bundled up in her lilac blanket, sleeping soundly. She had Buck and Christopher's curly hair, which Eddie loved, and a small birthmark like Buck's. Buck swore she had Eddie's pouty mouth and got the same look that Eddie had when he was hungry and upset about being kept waiting. Most of all, she already had a hold of their hearts just like Christopher does.
"Can I hold her?" Christopher asked from where he was seated on the couch.
"Of course you can." Eddie waited until Christopher was ready, then he handed Lillian over to her big brother.
"Hey, Lil, I am your big brother, and I am going to teach you everything I know. I am also going to protect you and keep you safe from all of the dangers out there." Lifting his head, he met his dad's eyes. "Just so you know, we have the best dads in the world, and pops is a complete pushover for us."
"You are mi sol." Eddie pressed a kiss on Buck's lips to stop him from arguing. He sat down on the loveseat, pulled Buck down next to him, and they cuddled up together as they watched their children.
"I love you so much, Eds," Buck whispered.
"I love you too, mi sol." Eddie pressed a kiss on top of Buck's head.
Despite the tension between them and the distance Eddie could still read Buck better than anyone and he knew that Buck was spiraling lost in what-ifs. Lost in memories of that horrible night. Eddie had never been able to get rid of the sounds of Buck's screams, they haunted him for months.
Buck had his phony smile in place as he praised May and was trying to talk her into getting a matching clipboard with him, Mara smiling at him asking if she could get one as well. Buck's smile turned real as he promised he would take her shopping for one as soon as they could.
Eddie basked in that smile, it was like the sun had come out. Being in El Paso had robbed him of that warmth.
He missed seeing it directed at him. Since that night in the kitchen before Buck decided to move out, that near kiss changed everything. He hasn't forgotten the longing of wanting to know what Buck's lips felt like against his. The desire to finally act on what has been brewing between them for years. He had seen the hope in Buck's eyes that died the moment Eddie stepped back and looked away from him.
Buck saw it as rejection.
Eddie wishes he could just tell Buck the truth, but he doesn't know what that is.
"Before you can move on, first you need to let Shannon go. She has haunted you for so long. You cling to her ghost and deny what your heart wants." Abuela's advice in his head.
Part of him would always love Shannon, she gave him Christopher, and had been his first love. But she wasn't the love of his life or his soulmate but before he could start anything he needed to make his peace with Shannon. Buck deserves better than to think he was competing against Shannon's ghost.
