one. the idea that astoria is a “nice girl” is baffling to me. we know that draco married her & loves her enough to stay married to her when his parents don’t like her — despite the degree of influence his parents have over him in different ways — which suggests that he definitely likes her. i don’t particularly understand how draco, whose hobby is making life difficult for people, would get along with a nice girl, or a gentle influence, or a salvific woman? i get the desire to redeem draco, but i don’t think astoria’s the way to do it. it makes a lot more sense if draco likes astoria not because she’s a sweet gentle darling who’s never done anything wrong, but rather because (john mulaney voice) his wife is a bitch and he likes her so much.
two. the idea that draco and astoria had an arranged marriage was such a popular one pre-cursed child and i’m grateful to CC if only for dispelling that. you mean to tell me that draco stays married to a woman his parents can’t stand — specifically, who his mother can’t stand — who encourages him to abandon malfoy naming practices and to stick exclusively to what we know of black & greengrass naming practices with his son because it’s expected of him? because it’s arranged? he’s staying with his wife because he loves her and he loves her because she’s the worst, thank you very much.
three. the idea that astoria is a stand-in for harry or hermione for ship purposes, or that she’s harry or hermione lite. this series is built on cycles & mirrors and if there is a character we should be modeling astoria on, it’s either andromeda or sirius ( most likely andromeda ): all our early astoria lore tells us that she is a former blood supremacist who experiences a conversion which is equally frightening to, though less violent than, draco’s conversion from these beliefs. the relationship she has with draco is enough to make him willing to raise a child — a child !! his son !! — in a way that his parents actively disapprove of, despite his childhood desperation for lucius’ approval and his deep respect for his mother. which, again, points to a specific personality type for astoria: deep potential for carelessness and cruelty, active choice to be better than that despite her failures.

@shesacred asked: ‘ friends are more important than any material object will ever be. ’ for nik from izzy’s grishaverse verse! / meme i can’t find.
“𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓’𝐒 𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐀 bold claim, don’t you think?” the privateer only has a grin on his face as he turns to his crewmate, wind blowing the reddened hair he’d come accustomed to into his eyes. as sturmhond, the prince put on a different face, but maybe it was closer to the person he’d always felt like he was PUSHING DOWN at the grand palace. the person he’d become on the waves was doing more for ravka than he ever could have as a prince — admitting that wasn’t something he was ready to do yet though. instead, he continues with his quip, mask ever present. “i’m a big fan of material objects myself, you know.” nikolai laughs then, knowing izzy would see right through his cocky and arrogant exterior. (it was one of the reasons he liked having her around so much). and her words are true: there were only a few people on this ship that knew HIS TRUE IDENTITY, most of them grisha, and they were the closest friends he’d ever had. he moves forward, dropping his arm over her shoulders. “i suppose i can make an exception for you. well, you and the twins. i think tolya would be hurt if i said i didn’t think he was more important than shiny things.”

so i have two versions of this — astoria’s a fjerdan tidemaker who flees to ravka after killing two drüskelle, and either she ends up in arkesk when she’s found by sturmhond, or she ends up in ulensk where she’s found by the darkling. so this already affords me the really cool opportunity to look at how a character evolves when she’s presented with two vastly different sides of the same situation, given the same initial circumstances. so here are some notes that are just generally accurate across the two:
one. we know, from what the darkling says about genya, that the corporealki / materialki / etherealki lines aren’t always clearly drawn, and that there’s genuine overlap across the board. it comes down to training — what one is trained in, who trains them, etc — and the choices made there. all of this to say: if astoria were brought to the little palace as a child she probably could have chosen between heartrender & tidemaker. there’s a lot of water in the human body; she’s self-taught, and taught by her mother ( a heartrender ), but she does have a talent for manipulating water, and so she focuses on water wherever it is, including in the body. she mainly trains as a tidemaker when the opportunity for formal training arises, unless the darkling, for instance, insists she train as a heartrender.
two. astoria’s mother is fjerdan; her father is, by origin, kaelish. astoria doesn’t know where her father is and hasn’t ever met him, but she’s been assured that she is in many ways his spitting image: while she has her mother’s brown eyes, she has her father’s red hair and curls, and she has a similar face shape — same jaw, same nose, same smile. she wants desperately to meet him someday, and i like to imagine that if she survives the events of ruin & rising, she tries to locate him.
three. astoria doesn’t do too much stealing while she’s on the run. not because she’s opposed to it — she’s really not — but because it’s fairly easy for her to charm people into wanting to help her? she’s a genius when it comes to giving a good show of being terrified and delicate, and she finds that a lot of people are willing to try and help her if she asks. she kills more than a couple of the people coming after her, though, and she never hesitates to loot their shit and keep it for herself, so she can pay for things sometimes.
four. in a surprising bout of sentimentality she refuses to change her hair. she’ll hide it, or put some mud in it to try and cover the color, but she will not even consider any more permanent change. she loves her hair; it’s her father’s hair, and her mother loved it, and she desperately misses her mother and wants her to come to ravka too, though she knows that’s not particularly likely, and it’s the one link to her family she refuses to sever. she’ll change her name ( she goes by asta or storya, or even a completely different name, to hide ) or hide her accent, but her hair stays untouched.
five. if she had a lot of options, she’d still always choose ravka. in the eventual verse where she flees to ketterdam instead, she’s still trying to find a way to get to ravka safely. it’s about power: she does not want to live in hiding and being vulnerable all the time. even when she’s on the volkvolney, the hope is always that she’ll be able to settle in ravka. she does not ever want to be powerless again.
