Guesswork Fairytales - Telepads
All they wanted to do was create a telepad. All they wanted to do was make somebody teleport from one side of the lab to the other. Unfortunately, they'd gotten so much more. Professor Porter moved into the machine and gave a frantic nod. "Yes, yes. I'm sure. I'll be the first human test." Animals had been working, you see. So now Professor Porter was trying his hand at human trials… without permission. "But Professor-" His assistant, clever Mr. Delvin Grey, was protesting as per-usual to his Professor's unorthodox methods. "Man will never progress forward if risks are not taken." Professor Porter paused, glancing over at his assistant. "Who said that?" "I believe the quote you're aiming toward is, 'Failure is a bend in the road. Not the end of the road. Learn from failure and keep moving forward.' Roy T. Bennett." His assistant answered dryly. "Now please Professor, the rat barely made it out alive." Unamused by his assistant's sass, Porter glared at him. "Time itself is staring us in the face and daring us to move forward!" He lifted his hands and grinned at his teleportation contraption - as Alvin saw it. "The question, love, is whether you want me enough to take the risk!" Alvin's face contorted. "Did you just quote Mine Till Midnight?" "Onward with the procedure!" The, 'before the sticks from the power company call and complain about the lights again' was implied. Sighing, Alvin moved to flip levers and flick switches. He pressed buttons that needed to be pressed and re-calibrated for human transfer. The theory of it, anyway. "Steady and go in fifteen." "I'm ready now Alvin." The professor protested. "Patience is the companion of wisdom." Alvin smirked at his own quote. Augustine of Hippo. Once again unamused by the sass, the Professor huffed and crossed his arms like the overgrown child he was. "Patience is bitter," he grinned before leaning against one of the panels. "But it's fruit is sweet." Aristotle must have known this time would come. What neither the Professor nor his assistant realized was upon leaning on that panel, something had hinged loose. Just as Alvin was about to ask the Professor about some odd readings set off by this shifting panel, the machine lit to life. Unlike times before, suddenly the machine was sparking with electricity. Before Alvin's panic had subsided the Professor was gone and the entire machine exploded, the explosion being sucked into a small tare in the air. from the other portal came another explosion, a screeching noise, what Alvin thought to be the Professor - what other human would be thrown through the telepod - and a screeching noise… and was that… a creature??
