#128 - And while we’re at it: Shexna
As it sometimes happens, bascially a day or so after that last post an album came out that reminded me of the fact that I had forgotten to mention a certain band that is actually quite interesting to take note of when it comes to interweaving Modern Metal elements with elements of traditional or folk music.
You may remember that some time ago I wrote about a Russian Industrial Metal/Modern Metal band by the name of Bog[~]Morok. And how they left their early Death-y/Doom-y kind of sound for a more avant-garde and Industrial sound with their second album around 2005. Interesting thing is, they didn’t really just leave this part of their sound by the wayside. Not only will you still find a lot of traces of it in their later work, as I already mentioned back then, but they also formed another band in which those elements are still very present, called “Shexna”. Concentrating on slow crawling melancholy and kind of sad grooves and melodies, mixed with traditional instrumentation and traditional clean vocal styles.
But having still most of Bog[~]Moroks line up, you also find traces of the more modern, Industrial side of their sound in Shexna; with some compositions sounding quite Modern Metalsy in the way that traditional instruments are layered into the songs, how the songs are structured and, of course, also those deep rumbling guitars with their leaden mid-tempo Meshuggah-y grooves. It’s a really interesting calm but very heavy in mood and guitar work hybrid of Doom-y Metal with traditional elements and a mathy Industrial undercurrent.
The release that put me on this is actually their new recently released new album "Вы завийте, витерочики...", which I absolutely recommend you check out if anything of the above or some of the stuff in the last post sounds appealing to you.
