just heard a bird calling outside, and i realised that even though i've been hearing this song all my life, i still don't know what kind of bird it is that makes that sound. it just reminds me how little i know about the world around me. i mean - i tend to think that google can teach me anything these days, but it can't listen for me, and i don't know how to describe it. i could probably look for a list of birds common in my area and youtube all of them, but there would be hundreds of calls to listen to and it would take a long time. in other words, there's still something to be said for learning directly from the lips of people around you. not that i didn't know that before, obviously, but it's just a nice reminder that technology isn't always a shortcut.
