It’s Fine Press Friday!
This week we present Cutaway by book artist Sarah Bryant, printed in the spring and summer of 2007 in Gordo, Alabama for her imprint Big Jump Press. The book was produced in an edition of 45 copies signed by the artist, and it was letterpress printed on mylar, Rives BFK, and Hahnemühle Copperplate. The text, set in Century Schoolbook, was printed from polymer plates. In an artist statement about Cutaway, Bryant writes “Simple definitions, both visual and verbal, can describe a great many disparate things with the same language. This book features layered cross-section imagery printed on translucent material, removable cards printed with color, and reference language that that is mixed and shifted throughout the book.” Our copy of Cutaway was acquired with funds from the Ettinger Family Foundation.
Sarah Byrant is a part of a book artists collective known as Shift-Lab that explores collaborative work methods pertaining to the artist book. I was able to meet Sarah and another Shift-Lab member Macy Chadwick at an art exhibition at The Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin in September for their project Trace, which was done in collaboration with Katie Baldwin, Denise Bookwalter, and Tricia Treacy.
