The timeless sadness of Shigeru Umebayashi θα μπορούσε να είναι ο τίτλος. Μια βραδιά αξέχαστη. Μια μοναδική οπτικοακουστική εμπειρία. Καθαρές νότες και επαναληπτικές ταλαντώσεις. Τότε δεν είχα συνειδητοποιήσει τι ακριβώς εννοούσε. Πλέον μετά την προχτεσινή συναυλία στο Ηρώδειο, αντιλαμβάνομαι απολύτως τι εννοούσε. Ο Dirk Brossé, η Αthens Philharmonia Orchestra και το σχήμα Alex Drakos Ensemble ακολούθησαν πιστά την εν λόγω παρότρυση. Αποτέλεσμα; Αισθητική ευδαιμονία. This is a beautiful, lush soundtrack that oozes sophistication. Listening to it made me yearn to see the film again, the music encapsulating Wong Kar-Wai’s wonderful film which evokes film noir/romance of the 1950s, with the red velvet curtain pulled back to show Hong Kong in the ‘far future’. Albeit that 2046 is now just round the corner, and likely to be a disappointment to Sci-Fi fans. This is not a ‘Sci-Fi’ film in the conventional sense; it’s essentially a follow-up to Wong’s equally sumptuous In The Mood For Love, which was also scored by Umebayashi. The 2046 of the title refers to the room number of the main protagonist (as well as the year) and the hotel corridor aesthetic makes the film particularly Lynchian in its visuals. But now to the score. For the title theme Umebayashi deploys melody and lush orchestration in the way that Morricone mastered in previous decades, to the extent that you can’t believe you’ve not heard the tune before. His variations on this and other interlude music are complemented here by tracks by Dean Martin (Sway), Connie Francis (Siboney) Nat King Cole and others. Other notable inclusions are the Spanish composer Xavier Cugat; another piece of soundtrack music, a Zbigniew Preisner piece from Krzysztof Kieślowski’s The Dekalog; and the beautiful aria ‘Casta Diva’ from Bellini’s opera Norma. It may sound like a strange mix, but it’s all perfectly in keeping with the sumptuousness of Umebayashi’s score and Wong Kar-Wai’s film. If you’ve not seen it, watch it now.
