So, I've been trying to answer your SPN ship questions and inevitably this leads to too much thinking and things ballooning out of control because I have entirely too many ships. Whether a thing is canon or not or even whether the characters necessarily interacted doesn't really matter to me. I love Au's. I love taking characters with interesting personalities - complimentary or clashing - and just sticking them together and seeing what happens. (1/?)

And what shipping really is about for me, is about taking a character and stripping them down to this kernel of who they are, then sticking them in a new or different situation and seeing what happens. I'm very much the sort of writer that starts with a 'what if' then lets the characters do what they want. By shipping two characters you might not think would go together, you can find interesting and new facets to those characters. (2/?)

It's like, your usual ships that are fandom saturated tend to have formulaic dynamics, but by breaking out of those molds you can discover things you didn't think were there. Not that I don't like the molds, I ship Destiel and Wincest plenty and I love some tropes. But for example, Victor and Benny are two of my favorite big burly guys to ship Dean with, and the two of them are seasons apart. But sticking the three of them together? Very interesting dynamic right there. (3/4)

  So the shipping to me becomes about learning new things about our characters. Taking this stripped down core of what they are and building new layers around it. Different relationships and au scenarios that would affect how their personality has developed from experience. We all act differently around different people, don't we? We all interact differently depending on who we are interacting with. We let other people see different things. And I want to see all of it. (4/4)

Awesome! Thanks for the answers! I’m finding it really interesting that people who are self-described multishippers generally have answers similar to this. And honestly, I feel pretty similarly.

To answer my own question a bit, one of the reasons I ship so many characters and ship them in odd combinations is because I want to keep them alive in a way. I want to explore them further and see who they are in different situations. It’s character study, in a way.

Fandom as a whole might have certain tropes and AUs that are common, but I think it’s endlessly fascinating that certain ships have their own conventions and interpretations as well. Some of them are great, some of them suck, and some of them make me want to tear my hair out. But I think it’s endlessly fascinating that there is so much variety not only between fandoms, but between ships. 

Feel free to use this as an opprtunity to discuss some of the things you enjoy that happen in one ship but not another, or some things that drive you crazy.

Oh I ship basically everything; I can see cuteness in every pairing. I do like zouis and zarry, they're super cute and I have tags for them if you look at my tags page!

But the only ships that make me cry are zayn/liam and louis/harry so I'd say they're my favorite and I blog about them the most.
