Surprisingly, but also unsurprisingly, Hometown Cha Cha Cha has once again exceeded my expectations with episode 10.
There are SO many things that I really like about this episode, such as Dushik and Hyejin's shared moment in the hospital, the neighbors caring for both Dushik and Hyejin, Ji PD's comedic but also heartfelt confession, Hyejin purposely getting drenched in the rain, to name a few.
I would say I feel silly for thinking Dushik was going to reject Hyejin, but it's validating to know that others felt the same way hehe. The writer is truly a master at subverting expectations in the BEST way.
I also really appreciate the writer for keeping the characters consistent. One of my favorite things about a romance is seeing how different the characters are, compared to the beginning and to the end. You can already see those changes within Dushik and Hyejin. But at the same time, they are still the same people. Their personalities don't change drastically just because their relationship is changing, and I absolutely love that.
You can see a clear example of this specifically when Hyejin comes to stay at Dushik's house after the intruder incident. Dushik still teases her and jokes around, all while giving her those soft and charming smiles. Hyejin still unabashedly and admiringly speaks her mind, all while offering words of comfort like the warm-hearted person that she is. It's so gratifying to see how much thought the writer has put into these characters and their interactions with each other.
It makes me appreciate their growth throughout the previous episodes even more, particularly in episode 3. Episode 3 is one of my favorites because of the start of understanding between Dushik and Hyejin. They got into an argument because neither of them could understand the other's point of view when it came to Gam-ri's situation. However, both of them still took what the other said to heart and changed their minds without the other even knowing until the very end of the episode. Seeing all of that come to fruition following episodes 4-10 is just incredible.
Going forward, I know there will be angst and heart-wrenching moments, but I know it's going to be okay. The show has a way of making me think one thing is going to happen, but then it does a complete 180 in a way that is so satisfying and rare, and it makes me love the show even more. For example I've seen a few posts talking about how Dushik acting like himself instead of pretending to be the perfect boyfriend in episode 9 was fantastic, and how the overall show is really good at putting a twist on classic romance tropes, and I absolutely agree.
I'm SO excited to see what the rest of the show has in store for us! Seeing as how the original movie came out in 2004 (haven't seen it yet but definitely plan to), it makes me wonder just how long the writer has been working on this story. I'm sure she had a lot of time to really hone and polish it up to create one of the most beautiful stories I've ever witnessed.
Just wow, what an amazing show. Hopefully I'll be able to focus on school until this Saturday haha!
