Tuesday May 22 Took a 9:20am train to Interlaken Ost (via Bern), ~2 hours. Then a 20’ regional train to Lauterbrunnen, which is at the base of the truly high Alps. Next was a cable car to Grupfeld, a cog train to Mürren, a 15’ walk through town, and finally 2 more cable cars up to the Shildhorn summit. View was absolutely stunning, all the way from Interlaken to Shilthorn! This place was made famous from the fight scene in the Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. There are 007 themed toilets (labeled “Bonds” and “Bond Girls”- not at all PC), and a rotating restaurant where we had a light lunch. Elena had a 007 martini with vodka (not gin), which hopefully also followed the Bond requirement “shaken, not stirred”. Took about a thousand pictures as the fog swirled in and out! Retraced our steps back to Mürren by 2 cable cars, where we had a good local beer (half liters, of course) and a pizza with a breathtaking view into the valley below. Took the cog train and the final cable car back to Lauterbrunnen, the regional train to Interlaken Ost, and the IC trains back to Lausanne via Bern. We were incredibly lucky weather-wise in Switzerland, and this day was no exception. Arrived back at our AirBnB around 9:30p, exhausted but happy!
