Light Odyssey: Reflections in Glass and Nature・《Light Odyssey》: 光学ガラスが織りなす森の光と影

"Light Odyssey," created by SHIMURAbros, is a permanent installation at the Pola Art Museum in Hakone, Japan. This striking artwork, crafted from copper, stainless steel, and optical glass, offers a captivating interplay of light and reflection.

SHIMURAbros (シムラブロス) is an artistic duo comprised of Yuka Shimura (b. 1976) and her brother Kentaro Shimura (b. 1979), who hail from Yokohama—a city I now call home. They have gained recognition from Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs and have exhibited their works in cities across the globe, including Tokyo, Singapore, Taipei, New York, Perth, and Vienna.

Regardless of the weather—whether it’s a bright, sunny day or an ethereal, foggy afternoon—Light Odyssey transforms its surroundings. The glass surfaces reflect brilliant patterns of light or cast moody, shadowy frames, offering an ever-changing and deeply satisfying visual experience.

X-Ray Train — Lumiere Bros to SHIMURABROS (2007)

‘The duo, whose name is derived from various brothers involved in the film and art world — Warner Bros., Coen Bros. and Chapman Bros — strive to recreate, in all of their work, the same level of shock and effect that “Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat” by the Lumiere Brothers, one of the first-ever films, was received with in 1895.

“We start with film, and when we shoot a film it is connected to the Lumiere brothers,” explains Yuka.

“(In 1895), the audience thought a real train was coming (into the theater), so the brothers had real power through their images. But now, when we watch the same film we don’t actually think it’s a real train. We want to try to gain that same initial effect and power.”’

‘Japanese audiences are very respectful - quiet and static. They sit and watch, but don't go around the pieces. When we showed EICON in Paris, the audience went behind the screen and touched it to feel its physicality. In Vienna we showed X-Ray Train at MQ Museum Quatier and there people went between the screens. I asked one man why, and he said it was very exciting because he felt as if the train was coming towards him. Some children were trying to catch the screen, so we thought they must have also felt the existence of the image.’

MMY: Mouse Made in Yokohama (2009) - SHIMURAbros

‘SHIMURABROS.’ installation “MMY: Mouse Made in Yokohama” is made from mainly sealed liquid film, acrylic and steel. In a separate gallery room, visitors can view the cartoon in which Mickey Mouse has been digitally removed, while in the main space an image of a mouse is projected onto Hirata’s screen.’

‘We digitally removed the image of Mickey frame by frame from the animation you view on a TV screen in one part of the space and created a form that's projected onto multiple screens in a second room. What you see is an outline that appears Mickey-like, but is actually an amalgamation of a mouse, camera parts and a silkworm.’

‘The absence of Mickey highlights the presence of a different kind of body - one that was photographed and used as a record of time. In looking at the space where the body was, we also look at a kind of image of the past.’
