The Villain of Romance - Overall Review
So I just completed this series last night and it’s more than about time I gave my full out review on it. I think a lot of people disliked this drama for many reasons, but as for me... Well, keep going to know more!
Plot
The story is focusing on two college students that are experiencing dating problems in their relationship together. It’s mostly going for clichés, but gradually they work through each of their differences and issus to make their relationship lasting.
Albeit very simple, the plot was okay, it showed different sides of what it is to be in a relationship and making it work. It was mostly satirical in my opinion and not meant to be taken seriously, as most of the traits shown were actually over exaggerated for comedy purpose. That kind of humour might work for some and might not for others. I found it entertaining. And through all that, they still carried a message and to me that was good.
Overall, it’s nothing super extraordinary, but it deserves a round 7/10.
Acting
Here, it’s kind of interesting, because I would say that the acting is actually rather poor. But it’s also kind of staged. It’s like, we did it on purpose. So if you’re looking for dashing acting skills, I would suggest to skip on that one. Nobody is taking themselves seriously, and that’s something I personally liked about this show.
However, purely based on the scale I’m usually using for rating acting, as non speaker of the language, this gets a little 5/10.
Aesthetics
The visuals and sounds of this drama was nice, it matched pretty well with the story and what was going on. Everything was lighthearted, which was nice. There’s nothing much more to say about it. They did well, but it wasn’t stunning either. It’s a 7/10.
Do I recommend this drama?
I would say I do recommend this drama to anyone who would like to watch something very lighthearted. There are some extracts that are a little darker and more seriously, but it’s mostly a satire. I’ve seen a lot of backlash on the comments saying that the relationship is toxic and everything. But that’s kind of the point? The two protagonists are working through the toxicity of their relationship to make it work and grow. I think that’s the interesting part, because it’s talking about very toxic traits that are often shown in dramas, but that it’s never actually addressed as a problem the main couple has to solve. I mean, I haven’t watched that many recent k-dramas lately, so maybe the curve changed on that matter, but still. For the longest times, these things were okay, even dreamy, and now that it’s put into a comical way, it isn’t? I don’t know. For me they just making a lot of fun of those situations while showing ways to grow out of it. It actually gives decent advice on dating, in my opinion, not that I’m a dating expert. Plus, the show’s name is the Villain of Romance, obviously there would be bound to have some bad things happen. Anyways. It’s funny, it’s light, it’s a short ride. I would say go for it if you don’t take everything seriously when there’s no need to. It overall gets a 7/10 for me. It’s not going to be drama of the year, but still. It’s a fun watch, so enjoy it!

The Villain of Romance - Episode 10 Final Episode
This is it! It’s the final of this short series. I enjoyed myself so far and we left on a cliff hanger on last episode, I need to know if Heejae was hit by a car or something.
Very long replay of the last episode. Heejae got hit by the car, Yoojin managed to escape Jinwook. Nobody helped even though there were a lot of people around. She rushes to Heejae, who sits up only to faint again once he knows Yoojin’s alright and that he’s bleeding a lot from the head.
Yoojin decides to get revenge on Jinwook and she uses her jujitsu techniques to beat him up. Once she’s out of the police office, she meets with Heejae who’s not too hurt from being hit by a car and they are back dating. However, not long after, he gets drafted to the military. The narration says they stopped dating 6 months later... What does it mean then?
Seven years later, Hyeon and Yoon are married, they own an internet cafe. Yoojin works in a publication house. She has to go on a meeting with an author that seems to be very popular. Who’s ready to bet that it’s Kang Heejae who suddenly cancelled plans with Hyeon that same day? Me. Obviously it’s him. He wanted to see her again and uses that opportunity to get back together with her.
And the end! See you soon for my full recap about this series!
The Villain of Romance - Episode 9
Only two more episodes before this is over! The last episode reverted to being a little bit more on the lighthearted side. I don’t mean that it wasn’t dramatic or sad, but it included more fun stuff than the previous one, which made me feel better, since that’s exactly what I like the most about this one.
Yoojin goes on a blind date, but it doesn’t go so well, as the guy is pretty obnoxious and Heejae keeps texting her. He tries to get to her after she left the blind date, but she still remains on her position that she won’t date him again and she tells him to find a way himself to deal with the break up. Hyeon kind of takes care of Heejae and brings him food, but doesn’t really care about what he’s saying and goes on about his night: he has plans with Yoon. He’s helping her to apologize to all the guys she used by the past.
Yoojin tells her parents she broke up with Heejae and that she’s fine, but mom sees clearly through. They encourage her to let her pain show, she shouldn’t hold it all in. It’s alright. I think the dad kind of liked Heejae, because his reaction of happiness is somewhat bitter and regretful. Anyways. She receives a call at night from Jinwook and she agrees to meet with him. Meanwhile, Heejae goes to her place to give her a letter he wrote, but he’s hesitating. Yoojin’s dad tells him to put it in the mailbox which scares the hell out of Heejae. He takes the letter from him and invites him in for a drink. To say goodbye. The dad being on the shore, pushing the ship that is sinking still.
Hm... Yoojin isn’t wearing the same outfit as when she left the house. She had a somewhat cropped top that showed her belly and now she’s wearing an inside pants shirt. It doesn’t matter, but they should pay attention to such details. Jinwook wants to apologize but that doesn’t go well. And for a reason. Yoojin’s dad tell Heejae that Yoojin was a victim of violence in a previous relationship. Jinwook beat her up because she wasn’t going along his line. So the reason the dad kind of likes Heejae is because he brought his daughter back to her normal self once she started dating him. Heejae is crying like a baby. He feels he’s not good enough, not worthy enough to love her. But dad is a matchmaker, he put the letter on Yoojin’s desk and lets her know as soon as she comes back home. The letter talks about their meet cute and she calls him. They are on their way to meet to reconcile, but Jinwook grabs Yoojin around her neck while she’s waiting for Heejae to cross the street (it’s a red light). Heejae rushes to cross the street seeing that and a car honks and... Is it a car crash or not? Who knows. We’ll know in the last episode of The Villain of Romance! See you!
