SHINE EPISODE 1 – BREAKING THE SHACKLES, MOON RABBITS AND HARE-RAISING LEAKS

I just watched Ep.1 of Shine and that signature Be On Cloud magic is all there, from MileApo's incredible chemistry to the excellent acting, layered, stormcloud-portentous storytelling, on-point soundtrack and beautiful cinematography.

The visuals are, as expected, impressive and arresting even if the late sixties styling seems a little bit too slick at times and thus doesn't always hit its mark in terms of historical accuracy. But overall the production seems to be simulating the spirit of the times admirably, capturing the glossy, jangly, happy hippie vibe as it contrasts with the darker undercurrents of life-on-the-edge rebellion.

I don't know enough about Thai politics or history to comment on the setting (not yet, anyway), but I do know that globally the late sixties were a time when youth all around the world were afire with the belief that change for the better was possible, even if it meant violent struggles to realize their hopes and dreams. The parallel with Trin's life in France is striking, because the soixante-huitards leading the charge for social equality in France were role models the world over, even if they might not have known it at the time.

OK, so on a fluffier note, Tanwa's silly little joke that finally broke the ice with Trin at that ganja party had me scratching my head until I managed to look it up. 🤣

When Tanwa talks to a befuddled Trin about a lunar lagomorph, he is referencing the East Asian legend (found in Thai, Chinese and Japanese cultures, among others) that a rabbit is present on the moon.

That Trin is confused by this may be a little nod at the idea that he's out of touch with his Asian side (having spent a fair bit of time in the west, French girlfriend and luxe Parisian abode all part of the deal). Although I'm half-wanting to think his apparent befuddlement is also because he's dazed by the blinding dazzle of Tanwa's effulgent charisma and freewheeling sexual energy (and who can blame him? 🤩).

So what's with Tanwa's quip about the "hare-raising leak" though? Well, what he actually says in Thai is ยิงกระต่าย/ying kratai, which means shoot the rabbit (and he makes a little shooting motion and sound at the same time). And ยิงกระต่าย/ying kratai is colloquial slang for a man urinating (literally shooting the rabbit). And it's funny because, well, he talks about a man stowing away on the moon expedition to escape the strictures of Earth, but then when he needs to pee, he shoots the moon rabbit as well.

Not surprising that it took a peen-wielding reference to turn bisexual Trin's head! (And I suppose Tanwa guessed that it would too. 🤣)

Anyway, I'm looking forward to future episodes – Shine certainly does have promise!

I just really really wish I was blind and stupid. Bc I see with my 2 eyes that Trin and Tanwa are happy in ep5 but I also see in the trailer for the series that Trin punches the fuck outta him and if I was stupid I wouldn't be worried about this bc I would have forgotten it already
