(Hey everyone. I just wanted to thank everyone who read this far and liked my story enough to read it to it's end. I had a lot of fun writing it and it makes me happy knowing some people loved it enough to read it fully. If you liked this consider checking out my other works. Thanks to everyone for reading this, faving it, or leaving a nice comment. And thank you to Koyoharu Gotouge for creating such wonderful characters and giving me the opportunity to make this wonderful story.)
Warm blue skies faded to make way for her dark sister to claim for night. The sun kissing the horizon good night as it's last few rays of light disappeared from sight. Mothers called their children inside their warm houses to sleep in their cozy beds safe and sound until the next morning. The silence was peaceful on the warm summer night breezes. The calmness soothing the crickets to sing their lullabies to the dimming lights of the homes. Lantern lights being put to sleep after a long usage. The bustling town settling down and falling asleep soundly.
Her door opened quietly and she stepped out of her house and into the quiet, barren streets. The moonlight shining down and kissing her form. A shiver running down her spine from a warm breeze ghosting over her form. It would be a good night to fish. The door closed softly as she started walking towards the woods outside the village, fishing line curled up within her right hand. The moon shown down upon the forests illuminating the night bright enough for her to see and watch as the trees swayed im the warm breezes and hear the peaceful rustling of their leaves and lullabies of the crickets. It was just so beautiful and lively. She always loved doing this. Free from crowds of people and being able to peacefully just live in these moments.
The sweet smells of flowers and grass were encouraging her lungs. Combined with the warmth of the summer air warming her muscles and urging them on. Both made her feel as light as a feather on her mere feet and the ground felt soft under her. She was smiling. Arms out splayed against the wind blowing around her hair like crazy and cooling her body against the warm heat beaming down on her. Step after step. Faster and faster. She joyously started to run through the pathways and around a corner of a house as soft dirt pathways turned into grassy floors of forests as she excitedly entered the beckoning woods. The moonlight being blocked out a bit because of the swaying trees and branches but she could still see perfectly fine. The small river so many people liked to fish at during summer wasn't too far from where she entered. It was just nearly a quarter of a mile into the woods. She loved coming out during these warm months and gathering the natural resources the forest provides her small village. It really was a perfect place to live being so abundant in resources and stationed within such a secluded and safe location. The way her found the decently sized pond was walking through a bush and having to blink when a flurry of sparkling lights glared her eyes for a second.
Blinking her eyes adjusted to the beautiful and wonderful sight of a dark beautiful river reflecting the moon on its surface and sparkling as if the reflection had its own stars and consolations within its ripples. Completely untouched and waiting for her to touch its soft silence. Soft footsteps approached the gleaming water and a carbon copy of a woman appeared in the gleaming reflections. She smiled up at the original mirroring the actions of the woman above. The woman's fiddled with her line and the small contacts she brought along with her. A hook with a big, juicy worm stabbed on the end of it dangled over the woman in the dark reflection before dropping into the water and rippling the reflection woman away back into the darkness of the waters.
The night was a beautiful thing if you needed it to be, or if you wanted to make it become that way. And in a way, it was both to her in the end. The sweet smells of flowers and grass filling her lungs. Combined with the warmth of the summer season warming her smaller body as she walked along the forest back towards her small home. Tonight was the perfect night to go fishing within the woods as it was warm, full of food, and a wide variety of other items that she could harvest. Wild berries to be picked. Old fruit trees long forgotten. A small river with plenty of fish that only she knew. It was perfect for someone like you who loved these nights. Even taking time to pick up a few stems of basil and what fruits were left by the hoards of hungry men who flocked through here during the day. She could just harvest and hunt whatever she needed even if she lost track of time and it was fairly dark now. It shouldn't take her too long to get back to her village, but even then it'll be darker and later before she got back anyways. Not that she were too worried about still being in the woods when night fell, after all there wasn't really anything dangerous like bears or tigers where she lived. They usually didn't go near human settlements. The most dangerous predator in these woods was the hawks and owls with the occasional fox here and there. She doubted a bird or tiny fox would even want to bother her or her family, despite her size she was still much bigger compared to them and it wouldn't be worth the fight for the food she carried when they could easily hunt their own. So no. She wasn't worried at all. And it was beautiful outside tonight, a warm breeze in summer and the moonlight being her companions for the long trip back home.
She sighed and sat back on the rocky shore, feet dipped in the cool waters helping her relax back in the moment. Eyes closed and feeling the calmness wash over her. Serene. Bliss. Peaceful. She didn't even suspect the the rippling of the water's surface or the dark lumbering shadow under the waves that came swimming from the depths. Purple eyes however did blink open when a particularly strong tug on her line. That snapped her out of her zen, small hands quickly grabbed onto that fishing pole and pulled back.
A hard tug was pulled back on the pole as it bent dangerously much to her pleasure. HELL YES!! It was a big one! It'd feed her and her sisters for a few days if they dried it right! It was probably a big bass!! Another hard tug. Or a giant catfish!! She grunted pulling back harder, spinning the reel back. Or an incredible large trout!! She leaned back harder. Or a-
?!
Something gave sending her sprawled backwards. Oh no. Did her line just snap?! Quickly her hands found the line once more reeling the light line all the way back, finding nothing but an empty hook. What the-?
"You hoo!!"
Her body instantly tensed up. Oh NO-
"SHIIIIINOOOOBUUU-CHAAAAAN!!!~"
She groaned hand already reaching up to Ruby her temples. "You're here again?"
"Naturally, Darling.~"
"Don't call me that."
She decided to instead of looking at him to ignore the presence of the large predator drove.that most likely scared away all the fish away in fear of being eaten alive. A nuisance really despite the muscle and power that he exuded like a bolt of lightning ready to strike any moment. But he teetered between such things as a harmless calm puddle and the for mentioned lightning.
She paid the creature behind her not an ounce of attention or fear despite the fish running for their lives. The dam fish bait!! He must've purposely pulled on her line just to mess with her again!! Angry violet eyes glared at the empty hook, not even the worm left. She only paused as claws weaved through locks of her bangs. Only then did Shinobu turn to finally look at the cold eyes.
Like fragmented stained glass they were. Pretty but glossy with nothing barely in there despite their beauty. Claws that could kill, and probably have killed, combing over the delicate locks in their hold. Petting her and slowly trailing down her face until the dangerous webbed hand cupped her scowling cheeks.
"There. So beautiful.~"
"You've been a pain ever since I untangled you from the net you were in!"
Another coo as the ocean dwelling creature leaned closer from the edge of the stream he now occupied. "So mean. I'd prefer to call it taking care of the woman I'm fond over.~ My sweet little plaything.~"
She should've just left him to detangle himself all those years ago but nooo! Her being young and naive didn't heed the warnings of being associated with creatures no human should tangle with and believed the legends of those helping out fae folk and the like would get unbelievably good fortune. Unfortunately it only brought her a clingy merman professing his undying LOVE to her every time she showed up. Bringing her seashells and fish and sometimes literally jewelry he swore up and down came from shipwrecks. She kept the fish and jewelry since they were actually useful, but the shells she threw back in the river when he wasn't around. But she never accepted his advances! No matter how pretty he was, he was still a predator first and an annoyance second.
This stunt just proved it.
"I said stop calling me that!!" Shinobu spat as his smug, half lidded face. "You already ruined my night! Ugh! Why can't you just sink to the bottom of the ocean and keel over already?!"
He gasped in response, hand dramatically over his chest. "Shinobu, you wound me so!" A hand pressed to his forehead. "I feel weak from your scorn! OH!!" She didn't even react as he dramatically turned around and flopped onto his back, head woefully landing in her lap as he clutched his heart. "My poor heart can't stand much more rejection from you! It just can't!!"
Actually the entire scene was pretty funny, she barked out a laugh actually amused and half still angry/annoyed with this fish breath. "I don't think you had that organ to begin to begin with."
He gasped. "Shinobu, you truly don't understand!" His arms threw themselves up in the air. "I'M READY FOR YOU TO TAKE ME NOW!" Dramatically he turned his head, hand again pressed to his forehead in a seductive pose. "Use me for your wicked womanly wiles! Crush me until I can no longer breath!! Make me beg for-!!"
"SHUT UP FOR STUPID ASS!!" She slapped his head continuously face burning a red despite the area being deserted except for them. Each one made him smile in amusement at her hopeless attempts to hurt him. "Are you a merman or a dam incubus?! You sure act like some pervert!!"
A finger pointed up. "Not true. I only act this way towards the woman I love."
"More like the woman you live to torment!!"
"Hmph! You Always have to spoil the moment."
"Will you let go of me if I did compliment you?"
"NOPE!~"
"Then suffer my wrath!!" His laugh was loud and echoed out with each hit both her fists pummeled on him, poke tossed aside forgotten about. "Stupid dam fish bait!! Chum brain!! Fucking sushi guts!!! I'll drive my pole up your ass!!"
"Really?~"
"NOT LIKE THAT!!" She stopped uselessly hitting him by now, her hits having no effect on him as she glared hard. "What do you even want THIS time?"
He perked up. "To earn my legs!"
She paused. "...Legs?"
"Yes. Mermaids can gain legs!"
"I thought those were just stories too."
"Oh. It's true. We just need our a kiss from a human.~" Douma puckered up at her to which Shinobu face palmed.
"Not gonna happen. And I know you're lying again."
He pouted. "Hmph. You only know it's fact because I didn't get legs last time you kissed m-"
"SHUT UP!!"
