hey can you explain to me the poem “Autumn comes, the wings of the locust are shed. A summer robe returns, and I weep aloud.”, like the context and meaning. I think its because he is sad that Yugao has died and that a budding affection has come to such an abrupt end. Does this also reflect the sick condition he is in? Would you call this romantic in any way? what do you think? (oh and this poem is from chapter 4 called evening faces)
Hey, thanks for the question!
In this case, Genji is exchanging poems with Utsusemi (who’s name means locust). (He moves on over sadness very quickly). He is mourning the fact that Utsusemi, whom he had an affair with, is leaving the capital with her husband.
Now for the actual contents of the poem:
The locust shedding/summer robe returns is a pun on the fact that as the seasons changed, so would the attire of the court. That is to say that as summer changed to autumn, the robes being worn would be made of thicker fabric and also have different colors/designs on them.
The poem referring not only to the departure of Utsusemi from the capital but also her departure from loving him (represented by the summer robe).
It is romantic in a sense, that Genji laments being parted from his lover. Even when looking at his track record with the ladies, it is hard to say whether he actually loved them or merely wanted the physical relationship. However, one must also consider that affairs were commonplace and poetry form of courtship.
Hope that helps!
(come back with any more questions~)
