Mast-Tree Grove by Ivan Shishkin
Volendam, Holland, from the Zuidende
Artist: Elizabeth Forbes (Canadian, 1859-1912)
Date: 1895
Medium: Oil paint on wood
Collection: Tate Britain, London, United Kingdom
Description
The remote fishing village of Volendam, near Amsterdam, was popular with artists in the 19th century. Here, the 17th-century Hervormde church can be seen in the distance, and beyond that, the masts of the ships moored in the harbour. Elizabeth Forbes made several trips to the area. Inspired by French artists, she liked to paint everyday scenes outdoors. Forbes was a Canadian but lived in Newlyn, Cornwall, and where she was a leading member of the Newlyn School and co-founded the art school.
