Jonathan’s “I love yous” are easy to miss. They’re subdued and discreet, considering the only two people who ever exhibited mutual affection was his mother and brother. Since he’s a man of only so many words, his love is better expressed in action -- attending parties he’s not really in the mood for, eating lunch with Steve and the Popular Kids in an attempt to reconcile with Nancy’s loosely connected social circle, actions like those tell Nancy that Jonathan is willing to feel temporary discomfort to make her happy, because she means that much to him. 

When he says it, he doesn’t dare say the L-Word so quickly, so he might communicate his love in ways of comfort. When Nancy feels as though the world is about to end, Jonathan is her rock. We’re going to be okay, because we’re together. It’s a corny phrase but Jonathan himself truly believes it, and hopes that Nancy will share in that belief when she hears him express that to her.

“If it’s helping with your Byers crisis, then maybe it’ll help with mine,” Mike says offhandedly.

“Oh, the fact that in the last year of the Byers’ living with us, I can actually count the number of times I’ve seen you and Will talk to each other directly? And I heard from Steve that according to Dustin, you guys don’t even talk to each other when the four of you are hanging out. Not that this is my problem,” Nancy says. She takes the bottle back from Mike and takes a sip.

Mike can’t really blame her. When hearing his current relationship with Will spelled out like that, he’d probably want a drink too. Actually, wait. Mike waits for Nancy to finish her turn with the bottle and motions for her to hand it back to him. He takes a few more sips of the wine. Jeez, the taste doesn’t get better even after multiple sips.

“Oh no, it’s really okay, Hop, I swear. It’s like, kind of my job, ya know?”

“I’m sorry?” Hopper spoke up, looking at Steve’s face like he thought he may have misheard. The rest of the crew also turned to look at Steve with confusion on their faces.
