Peggy Carter hadn’t expected Steve Rogers to come from war, and she made her peace with that. She first went through the motions of living her life normally and peacefully, but most days she had to deal with deep aching in her chest, and the empty place that he left. Though as time went on, the deep ache turned dull and she remembered how to truly breath again. She’d made friends, and even someone more than that, and after five years she felt secure in her life. Peggy didn’t realize the tug of loose thread could make it all unravel, make her unravel.
She saw the man standing before her and thought she was quite literally going insane, Steve Rogers was standing in her doorway at an hour that was quite inappropriate with that stupid boyish grin. Her heart had stopped in her chest and she felt like it was ready burst seeing him there, but it didn’t take for her mind to flood.
How long had he been back, why did he wait to find her, and who was going to earn a very angry phone call tomorrow for the fact she was not made aware, Captain America had been found. Her body was flooded with plenty of emotions as well a mix of love, and anger, and confusion rushed through her but at that moment in time most prominently anger, and before she could even think twice she smacked him in the face.
She took a moment to compose herself then let out a small sigh and looked at him, slightly embarrassed for the lack decorum she showed just moments prior. Tugging her robe closer to her body she licked her lips and let out a little bit of a huff. Her voice was thick, and her heart had fallen into the pit of her stomach, it took a little more half a moment before she finally found her voice. “You’re late.”
