Lumberjanes adults w/jobs AU??!?

Thinking about what kind of jobs the Roanokes would have when they grow up is so much fun! I've got a few opinions of my own regarding this, but I'd love to hear ideas anyone else has, too!

- I feel like April would be some kind of journalist! She seems very eager to collect info and document all the monsters they've run into, so that feels like a good fit to me. I was thinking maybe a professional wrestler due to her sheer amounts of strength, too, but also she'd probably just get frustrated that so much of wrestling is scripted & not authentic. So, journalism it is! Not only does she work as a serious journalist, but she also ghostwrites for magazines that discuss unexplained phenomena!

- Jo is working freelance on her inventions! She has plenty of money from her dads to fund her work, and she's also earning a bit from the inventions of hers that are safe enough to market. But really, she isn't doing it for the money, she's doing it for the love of discovering things! She's currently trying to build a prototype of a time machine! And also trying to reinvent the wheel. And flying bicycles. And french fry reheaters that don't make them all soggy. And actual hoverboards. She's a bit busy.

- Jen works with NASA to do a ridiculous amount of stuff! She loves space travel so much, she just wishes she had the ability to do Everything. But since she's only human, she needs to limit herself to spaceship design, safety regulation, research, and discovering more stars/galaxies/planets/etc. She tries her best not to overwork herself, since she can sometimes get a little too into her work at times!I also like to think that she's the one who eventually inherits the camp from Rosie! Every summer she goes back to run it - she limits herself to summers, since she doesn't want whatever happened with Rosie's aging process happening to her. She's a much more careful camp director than Rosie, but she's also more open about what the camp is and what's going on there!

- The most predictable of all headcanons, Mal plays in a band. I like to think that her first band didn't stick together too well (like most school, or even college, bands do), but she was able to find another that appreciated her skills, no problem! Her band isn't exactly famous by any means, but it's definitely famous in all the right social circles. Mal isn't the lead member (who remembers who's on bass when you're always focused on the singer and guitarist?), but she does have a few fans! Her favorite part about it is writing new song lyrics.

- Molly's a park ranger! Her job focus is on protecting the ecosystem of national park she's assigned to, and preserving the history of them. She still visits camp often, of course, and applies what she's learned in protecting the parks to protecting the camp! (And some stuff regarding protecting the camp to protecting the parks - you wouldn't believe how many magical critters get lost in regular national parks!)

- I like to think Ripley is still in college, but she's volunteering at an animal shelter! Not only does she love cats, but she also loves helping all the other animals - and she's one of the only people with enough energy to juggle so many tasks to do! Need the fish fed, dogs walked, cats played with, and rabbits cleaned? Ripley's got it all covered before you can blink an eye. (As a bonus, pretty much all the animals love her, too!)

Fanfic of how the 'Jane's parents met/had they had their kids??

Future LJ's (a few questions) Where would everyone live? How many kids would each roanoke have? Who will be married/dating who?

I assume this is adding on to this idea, so I’ll connect ‘em! Again, these are all just my personal headcanons, so anyone else is free to add on to them, play around with the concepts, or suggest different ideas!

Mal & Molly live closest to camp, since Molly’s working as a park ranger at a nearby park! Mal loves the location, but technically she lives all over the place, since her band tours around to lots of different locations. Their small cabin (and Molly) always gives her a warm welcome when she comes back home, though!

April & Jo still live pretty close to their childhood homes, and by extension, each other as well. Jo doesn’t really see the need to move around too much when she’s already got a well-established lab where she is, and while April thought she wanted to constantly travel & see as much of the world as possible, she found herself missing home most of the time when she went out of state for college!

Jen actually is the one who moved the farthest out of them all, having to go all the way to Florida to work at one of NASA’s space centers! She misses the rest of the Roanokes a lot, but this is her home now, and she still finds time to visit them whenever she’s able to fit that into her schedule.

Ripley’s currently in college! She went to an in-state one, wherever she’s from. The campus is just far away enough that she doesn’t run into any of her siblings in day to day life (Thank goodness! She wanted some space for once.) but still close enough that she can visit whenever she needs/wants to!(Also I just realized that it’s kinda odd for Rip to still be in college if the others are all getting married and having jobs and and things, so let’s just say that she took some gap years or something, I don’t know how real life works. Either way, Rip’s living her best life.)

Well, I obviously can’t split apart Mal & Molly for marriage. Maybe their relationship hit a few rough patches over the years, but they’ve been able to love & trust each other for so long, and they’re very grateful for it. It took them a while to propose, granted, but that’s mostly because they’ve already been so committed to each other that they felt like they were married even before it became official.

Jo & April... Again, these two don’t really have anyone in-canon that they’re interested in, so I don’t really think I’m gonna theorize about who they’d be with. I’ll just say that they each have a wife, and you can fill in the blanks of if it’s with a character we’ve seen in canon, one we haven’t, each other, whatever you prefer!

I really do see Jen having a wife, but we haven’t really seen any characters in-canon that she’d be interested in! One of my friends has a concept for a character that was made as kind of a “hey let’s give Jen a girlfriend,” so I guess I’d like to think those two get married :’)

Ripley’s in college, so she isn’t really interested in marriage yet! I also don’t really see Ripley as being one to jump right into romantic relationships easily, so maybe she’s still just figuring things out. Maybe she’s had a partner or two, maybe things worked out, maybe they didn’t, but relationship or no Ripley is doing awesome.

As for kids... I personally am someone who defaults to “no kids” when I think of the futures of my favorite characters, and also because I don’t see these gals as being old enough to be ready for that responsibility, funny enough! But I’ll do my best to try predicting or whatever a fancy word for that is...

Jen & her wife have two kids so far!! Maybe they have twins? I think that would be extremely cute. They’re both really good parents, and even though Jen tends to be busy at her job, she makes sure to take time out of her day to be with her kids. I like to think that one of their kids is really shy, while the other one is a chatterbox.

Mal & Molly don’t have kids yet only because Mal is still touring so much, and Molly has so much to do with her park ranger responsibilities. They really want to raise a kid together, but right now it just isn’t a good idea. They eventually adopt a real adventurous kid, once Mal decides she’s ready to put down her bass for a while and settle down. They’re very good parents together!

Jo’s wife has been hinting to her that she wants to adopt a kid, but Jo isn’t so sure, mostly because of how she’s working on some pretty dangerous inventions lately. She does want to raise a kid, but right now she needs to focus on either building all this stuff first, or at the very least kidproofing her lab.

April’s not sure still if she wants kids or not, but she and her wife have been making plans for if/when they decide to! The plans are a bit too detailed for a “Maybe this will happen” kind of thing, but also, April really is prone to making super-detailed plans for things she never ends up doing, so who knows.

Ripley is, yet again, in college, so the only “kids” she has so far are far too many kittens that she’s raising! Even in the future, she doesn’t really want to raise any kids, only cats. She becomes a cat lady, I’ve said it. And she’s perfectly happy that way!

Fave things to do outside of camp?

I don’t know if you mean things mentioned in-canon that the Roanokes like to do outside of camp, or my personal headcanons, so here’s a mix of both! Three things they enjoy for each Roanoke.

(Whoops this got long. It’s all under the read more!)

April:

- Winning things! If there’s a ribbon or a trophy or a plaque she can earn, she wants it. Doesn’t really matter what it is - skiing, poetry, chess, and everything inbetween… She wants it all! She’s a bit of a jack of all trades, thanks to this.

- She loves to explore, and then show her findings to Jo! Jo’s gotten a Lot of texts that are basically “HEY JO GET OVER HERE, IM NEAR THE BLUE HOUSE W/ THE POLITICS SIGN OUT FRONT AND THERES SOMETHIGN WEIRD” (Jo usually asks for what street it’s on after. And April doesn’t know street names. Mild chaos ensues as they try finding each other. But anyways.)

- To keep up her strength, she’s got a pretty strict workout schedule - good thing she always looks forward to it instead of dreading it! She does most of her working out at home, but sometimes she likes to visit a gym for more specific routines.

Jo:

- Working on tech in her lab! Her dads went a little overboard in ensuring their daughter has enough supplies & tools to work on her inventions. Although Jo complains that her dads are a bit Much, she really appreciates it.

- She prefers calmer hangouts with April - sleepovers, movie nights, even just playing a board game with both of their families together. Of course, there’s still some bit of adventure to these - even though they’re both almost-teens, they’ll still try hiding each other so whoever’s visiting doesn’t have to go home, like they did when they were kids.

- Watching and reading sci-fi! She usually doesn’t like most of the tropes used, and thinks that some of the “science” shown is a bit silly, and some of the stuff she watches she wouldn’t admit she watches. But... well, there’s something about traveling around on a spaceship with a loyal crew that calls to her.

Jen:

- She loves taking long walks to different parts of her neighborhood to look at the stars! Usually she goes with her mom. She’s trying to find which spot is the clearest for stargazing, since she wants to see all the constellations she can in real life - and maybe find the best place to set up that telescope she got for her birthday!

- She also likes learning about the local flora! Plants, trees, herbs, anything she can read about. Even though she’s got quite a few good books on it, she still likes writing up all the info she learns in a journal of her own, so that she can add on her own findings!

- Even though she argues with him a lot, she really likes hanging out with her brother. When he’s gone, she notices that she actually misses their usual sibling banter! (She can’t stand to be near him for too long, though, as most siblings are.)

Mal:

- Practicing with her band! They all usually get together in someone’s garage, and then they just go wild. Mal’s working on a few more structured songs for them to play, but until then, they’re just seeing what kind of music they can improv!

- Roller derby! She’s on a juniors team back at home, so that’s something else that takes up a lot of her time. Win or lose, she loves to participate in bouts against other teams! (Her mom cheers a bit too loud for her, but that’s okay.)

- Just hangin’ out with her friends! Some people from her band, some from her derby team, some of them are friends of her friends... She’s kinda popular back home! Sometimes they all hang at someone’s house, other times they rollerblade around town and get slushies together at a gas station.

Molly:

- Doing archery with her school’s team! She doesn’t really know anyone else on the team, but she does enjoy the accomplishment of her high scores. She’s also trying to get strong enough to be able to handle stronger bows, too.

- She likes to check out her local library to see if they got any new books on mythology and/or history! There usually isn’t anything new, but whenever there is, it’s a happy day. She doesn’t mind rereading books she’s forgotten the contents of, either.

- A whole lot of daydreaming! Usually during long car rides/the bus ride to school, but sometimes in other places, too. She’s thinking of writing something someday to get her ideas all down on paper, but she hasn’t found the time for it yet. (Aside from her Greek mythology fanfic, of course!)

Ripley:

- Playing basketball!! Doesn’t matter if it’s with her older brothers, her older sisters, her tias, the neighborhood kids, or even her abuela - she’ll play against anyone who’s willing!

- Making art! Ripley loooves to craft, paint, draw, write, sing, sculpt, everything! If there’s something new that any of her siblings are working on either, she usually wants to help. Most of her work is hung up around her side of the room, so much that whenever she makes something new, she has to decide if she wants to take something else down, or put the new thing up over some old things.

- Watching TV, of course! No matter if it’s one of her abuela’s telenovelas, or if it’s one of the scary movies her older siblings say she can’t tell mom that she saw, or a nature documentary her dad likes to see, a nerdy movie her mom wants to watch, she’ll probably watch along with.

What kind of music do you think the 'Janes like to listen to?

There are playlists all the Roanokes (besides Ripley) have made in the back of the first 8 issues, actually! So I think they’d enjoy stuff similar to those!

Please correct me on any of the genres because I know next to nothing about music.

April’s mix, Fox Fight Jams! has mostly rock songs. (Ex. Edge of Seventeen by Stevie Nicks, Northshore by Tegan and Sara)

Mal’s mix, River Adventure Mix of Dooooom, there’s quite a bit of punk music! (Ex. Rebel Girl by Bikini Kill [warning: uses the d slur], Forever by The Veronicas)

Molly’s mix, Cave Tunes, has mostly upbeat pop songs! (Ex. I Wannna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) by Whitney Houston, Corner of the Sky by the Jackson 5)

Jo’s mix, titled… well, Jo’s Mix, has music I can’t quite pinpoint an individual style for. It definitely isn’t as fast-paced as April or Mal’s style, but it all still makes me want to tap my foot to the rhythm. Does that make sense? (Ex. Sunshine by Rye Rye ft. M.I.A., Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac)

Jen’s mix, Jen’s Perfect Camp Mix, is a little vanalized by Ripley, so it’s a bit difficult to find a cohesive theme. Mostly, what connects the song is a focus on the empowerment of girls, which should be a genre in my opinion! (Ex. ***Flawless by Beyonce, Just a Girl by No Doubt)

Rosie also has a mix, called Rosie’s Turn. It’s a little all over the place, but I noticed all the songs are *much* slower-paced than anyone else’s choices, and they usually have a clear rhythm, too. (Ex. Terrible Things by April Smith and the Great Picture Show, You Can’t Be Told by Valerie June)

One final note, it’s clear that Ripley is missing a mixtape. Nothing in-comics is mentioned about her music taste, so here’s just two songs that personally remind me of her: Trampoline by Kero Kero Bonito, and Yeah by OMFG. High-energy stuff, y’know?

How do you think of April's mom? How do you think she passed?

TW: Mentions/discussion of parental death

April’s mom doesn’t get mentioned in the series aside from a short mention of her during Unicorn Power, so there isn’t much I can deduce from that. I’ve seen some other fans theorize that her mom died of cancer, but there’s no evidence in-canon to suggest that.

All we know is that Jo & April knew April’s mom when she was alive, and that she & April were fairly close. (”April’s mom attacked the day in a way that made everyone exhausted but April.”) This means April was probably at least a kid when she died - perhaps around the age of 7 or older?

Personally, I just hope that it was a more “natural” kind of death than any unexpected accident. Either way it’s a lot of grief for a kid to handle, but something more sudden can be almost traumatic, and I wouldn’t want April to go through that kind of loss.

So, do you think, like, Molly's mom is abusive physically or emotionally or what?

TW: Discussion of physical and emotional abuse.

Molly’s mom is definitely abusive, but the specifics of this abuse is left vague, which I think is on purpose. This is an all-ages comic, so that means we won’t see much of it “onscreen” (thank goodness), so that makes the lines between what “counts” as physical and/or emotional abuse blur.

I personally think that Molly’s mom is definitely emotionally abusive. The way she’s controlling of Molly, how it’s implied she sent Molly to camp to “fix” her, the entire nightmare Molly has about her implies this. (Not to mention the implied homophobia, too.)

She might be physically abusive too, the clearest indication of this is the way she grabs Molly when she’s introduced. I can’t deduce for sure from this alone, but again, I think that’s on purpose - it’s vague because all abuse is horrifying, all parental abuse has that kind of effect on kids, physical abuse can be just as emotional as emotional abuse can be physical. If that makes sense.

I really don’t want to end this on a sad or harsh note, so I just want to say - Molly is an extremely important character for this reason. She’s showing kids who go through all different kinds of abuse that it can get better, you can get better. Even when those abusive people are still in your life, even if you’re still a minor, you can find a group of people who love & support you, who can help you get through it. That’s powerful.
