Business cost and shipping

This year my wife and I have decided to jump into a new adventure.  This adventure is to work together and bring a product to market. One area that we are very interested in is the ability to ship out item in the best and most cost effective way. That is not easy to do when costs are actually rising in a market that is using shipping more and more. The President has even stated he wouldn't give more money to the United States Post Office in one of our relief bills unless they raised their prices.  It is usually the case that other companies like UPS and FedX will raise their prices accordingly because they can.  For them it is simply good business but for companies starting out that is a really big issue.

So for us our product will most likely weigh around 1 lb and we want it to be shipped safely. This brings to light lots of different shipping supplies that will come into play.  We will have to have a package for it to go in and we are not sure whether the best idea is to go with a plastic shipping bag or a box.  The weight has us thinking a bag is more cost efficient due to the weight and size, but it will most likely be less safe.  

A box will be more expensive due to the cost of cardboard and tape going into each box. The other area that comes into play is packing materials.  With a box we know the item needs to not flex or move around otherwise it will be damaged. If we put it in a bag this will most likely not be a big deal.  The bag can be sealed and the product won't move in it. So it will most likely be best to go with a bag instead of a box.

But that leaves the issue of where do we go and get our bags.  There are lots of different stores available that are brick and mortar and also online.  The easiest way to get shipping supplies is to go online and purchase them.  But if we are purchasing in bulk this complicates things. The research has shown that in mass bulk items are simply cheaper getting them online with companies that only do packaging.  These are the more cost effective but they also cost lots to start with.  The entry price is much higher than going to amazon.  So for us we have to calculate the quantities and find where it because feasible for us to use the big retailer vs amazon.

Why I like Cardboard for Shipping

I have been in retail for many years.  This has been in many different stores in completely different industries.  The changes in the industries have not been much except for online retail.  The move to shipping items a little bit more has become a trend and as this has picked up I have began to grow preferences for the types of Shippings Supplies used. There really are so many variables that it is important not to get lost in them. It is also important to keep track of costs.  That is generally a major part of business and should be considered in all aspects of what we are doing.

Now for several reasons I have found that cardboard boxes seems to be a major preference when shipping items.  It really doesn’t matter if the item is a shirt, a piece of equipment or a fragile item. In the long run boxes seem to fair better in the shipping process then bags.  This is simply because of the dexterity and strength that comes with the cardboard box.  In general most packages will be thrown down multiple shoots and lots of ramps and belts during the shipping process. It does not matter if you are using UPS, the United States Postal Service or Federal Express.  The process for shipping is similar.  I have been inside multiple warehouses for these companies and seen the rough treatment of all packages.  It must go from seller, to processing factory, to vehicle or plain and back again.  With all these transactions the product will be handled many times and crushed by other items all throughout the process. So instead of using a bag which will succumb to more damage due to the lack of strength and dexterity a box is usually a better bet.

Another area that matters when shipping for business is going to be the costs involved. Costs can vary depending on where you purchase your shipping supplies from and what you need to actually get those items to the post.  If you end up using boxes, you will need to invest in packing materials.  This can be plastic, peanuts, or paper products. 

 I prefer to use paper due to the ability to recycle it.  The long run health of not only my industry but the health of our environment matters and that is part of why I choose recyclable materials. So pack well be safe and find what works best for you.
