How do you feel about the ways they’ve tried to introduce the new characters from the games like Shadow and Rouge? Personally I was always bugged by the comics and how they kinda glazed over the events of games like SA2, was wondering g how you felt abt that
It’s… a mixed bag. I think the problem is they introduce characters like Shadow and Rouge assuming you’ve played the games and already know who they are, and as such skip over a lot of the important character development they get in the source material. But then they’ll like… reverse some of that character development, because it never happened on-screen in the comics
Rouge is a perfect example. They assume that the events of SA2 have already happened (more or less) in the world of the comics, so she’s already friends with the good guys, like she was at the end of SA2. Aside from the misunderstanding with Bunnie, she’s been portrayed as nothing but a hero, really. (Her thievery has been completely absent so far.) But we didn’t see what got her to that point in the comics. We skipped over all the important development she and Shadow had in the game, going from villain to anti-hero to hero, so she’s only really interesting if you already know her story from the games. But then, because they never actually showed that stuff, they can take it back and say “oh actually Rouge is still a villain sometimes” later on
Overall it’s just a mess. The events in the games both did and didn’t happen, and their progress as characters is basically just whatever the writers feel like at the time. And I don’t think they necessarily needed to adapt SA2 or any other game 1:1, but I think there needs to be SOME kind of story there to get us properly introduced to these versions of the characters. You can’t just drop them in willy nilly and go “eh, you probably already know who this is”
