You’ve counted to 100 in your head at least fifty times by now.

You can’t actually come up with a real ballpark number, but you can be sure that you’ve done it at least fifty times. Numbers don’t seem real anymore, just sounds in your head. You’re trying not to think of anything else, because when you’re alone with your thoughts in bed your mind wanders and trips and stumbles into pits full of things that dig deep and hurt and hurt and just thinking about the fact that these things exist is starting to hurt.

Maybe backwards this time? 100, 99, 98, 97, 96, 95...

It’s not that you have anything against waking someone up if they’re sleeping on you and you need to get up. It’s just that, in the time you’ve known Maybel, you haven’t seen her ever sleep. Maybe a nap here and there, but you’ve never heard the quiet snoring of real, restful sleep. Typically, she goes fast and light, with long stretches of sleeplessness in between.

She deserves this, you think. A moment to dream about something pointless, instead of the nightmares you know she has about Amber, about someone with her last name, about you. You’ve never asked her what happens in these nightmares. You’re not sure you want to know.

But isn’t this proof she trusts you? Her arms wrapped around you, her breath tickling your ear. Her first deep sleep in at least as long as however many months it’s been since you left the city, left Bugtown. And she’s entrusted you with it.

Maybe you should be happy.

You think that phrase a lot lately. Maybe you should be happy.

Why aren’t you?

You’re safe now. A girl is sleeping soundly on you. You woke up before the sun went down. You’ve been eating better than ever. Everything’s fine.

whereas outside of the cities there are LOTS of plants, and they runthe show, its a completely different atmosphere, very dangerous for anyone whos not a plant. which is why its so hard for nonplants to get food, unless yr really wealthy and can afford Synthetic Nutrition (not sure what kinda name im gonna actually give that). flesh fly for example CAN afford that but she hates it, prefers real food...some of the wealthier ppl have preferences for real food too but some are either squeamish abt it and thus prefer synthetic, or they actually place a lot of status in their access to it, ''look at what i can afford'' kinda thing. flesh fly has good access tho considering, its her job to get that real food

its interesting that the urbanized areas in this world actually have overall less population than outside of them, but thats because most plants have different needs for survival, just sun and soil, and thats also why carmine decided he had to go to the city, because its also hard for carnivore plants to survive n the other plants dont consider it a big problem
