Sobata (Hebrew: Shivta, Arabic: Subeita)

A Byzantine city found in the Negev.

In the photo we see the remnants of the open spaced mosque and the southern church in the background.

The city has been declared a UNESCO heritage site since 2005.

The earliest buildings point to an origin in the Roman era, but the city reached its largest during the Byzantine era. As is evident from the mosque, the city stayed inhabited during the first centuries of the Islamic era.

Earliest Depiction of Jesus Christ in Israel Discovered. Here's What It Shows.

Emma Maayan-Fanar was looking for shade from the desert sun when she saw the face of Jesus.

The art historian from the University of Haifa in Israel had been studying crucifixes and other motifs on the stone lintels of the ancient churches and houses of the ruined city of Shivta in the Negev Desert.

Although it was February, days in the desert can still get hot — and so Maayan-Fanar found some shade under one of the few pieces of roof still intact at the site, in the baptistery of the northernmost of three ruined churches in the ancient city.

That's when she saw eyes looking out from the stones — the very faint remains of a portrait of Jesus Christ at his baptism in the Jordan River, painted on the ceiling of the building around 1,500 years ago. Read more.

Customs Letter About a Long-Lost Suitcase Leads to Artifacts from Desert with Early 'Jesus' Painting

The ancient desert village of Shivta in southern Israel made headlines when archaeologists discovered a wall painting there that is thought to show the baptism of Jesus Christ, the earliest representation of Christ known in Israel.

Now, they have found about 140 long-lost artifacts from the village, which showed up in an archive in Jerusalem, after they were left behind in a suitcase more than 80 years ago.

The artifacts from ancient Shivta, in Israel's southern Negev Desert, were rediscovered last year, after researchers investigated a letter from a customs official about a "lost and found" suitcase left at the port of Haifa in 1938. 

The researchers found that the suitcase had been filled with small items from archaeological excavations at Shivta in the 1930s. And they tracked down its contents to the shelves of a museum archive in Jerusalem, where they had been overlooked for decades. Read more.
