Yokai: Brushie Brushie Tsukumogami

It’s Shumoku Musume giving her little friend Shogoro a brush and a good polishing. I want to make this character an artsy- craftsy type of person. She grooms and fixes up Tsukumogami that can’t regenerate properly, or just wants to look nice for Hyakki-Yagyo.  

Whoops, I forgot to talk about the Yokai. Shumoku Musume, or Hammerhead maiden, is an endearing Yokai that likes to hide around and startle people on mountain passes. It’s unclear whether she’s a Tsukumogami herself or her namesake comes from wordplay. Shogoro is a small temple gong Tsukumogami that crawls around like a turtle and smack itself with its tiny mallet tail. It’s noises are said to attract yokai, or generally be a bother to humans.
