I've been thinking about Filmmakers and how they stylize their films. Two directors, in particular.

The first; Wes Anderson, is one of my favourite directors for his choice of motion and angles. He uses very straight and rigid movements and almost always shoots exactly at eye level. His images are very two dimensional, neat and tidy. The amount of planning put in is very clear. The second; Terrence Malick, is another of my favourite directors, also for his choice of motion and angles but he's completely the opposite. Terrence Malick films seem to have no planning with regards to motion. They use organic, fluid motions that make you feel almost as if you're a ghost floating around and observing the events. Malick has been known to go off script for the sake of capturing real, authentic emotion.

In the first case you're completely aware that you're watching a movie, it stops you from getting too absorbed and allows you to laugh at things that you wouldn't laugh at if there was any sense of realism.  In the second case you're completely absorbed, it's the greatest sense of realism I've ever felt while watching a film. You don't feel like you're watching a film, you barely feel the chair you're sitting on.

These reactions to the two mentioned directors are very subjective. If you're not on the right wavelength then you probably end up being terribly bored throughout. These are two very extreme styles and a lot of people don't connect with them but they serve to prove a point.
