shooting at a Kroger grocery store in Tennessee
After a gunman opened fire at a Kroger supermarket in Collierville, Tennessee, on September 23, at least thirteen people were wounded, one fatally. Authorities said the suspect died at the site of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officials say a gunman killed one person and wounded at least a dozen others inside a supermarket store in Tennessee on Thursday.
The incident occurred at 1:30 p.m. inside a Kroger grocery store in Collierville, roughly 25 miles east of Memphis, police said during a press conference televised by Fox 13. According to authorities, the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officers swarmed the grocery store within minutes after the shooting, according to Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane, and began searching aisle by aisle for consumers and staff.
Lane stated, “We discovered individuals hiding in freezers and closed offices.” “They were doing exactly what they were taught to do: flee, hide, and fight. I despise the fact that we had to do it here.”

A bomb squad was inspecting the shooter’s car, which was discovered in the Kroger parking lot.
Lane refused to say what kind of gun the shooter used. According to authorities, he was discovered deceased in the back of the business.
Lane said at a second press conference televised by WMC that investigators planned to execute a search warrant at an unidentified site Thursday evening.
“We’re going to take this as far as we can to discover what’s going on and make sure no one else is involved,” Lane added.
During the incident, the business had 44 staff and an unknown number of customers inside, according to Lane.
While standing at a counter, Glenda McDonald, a Kroger flower department employee, heard gunfire, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
McDonald told the newspaper, “I just rushed out the door.” “I forgot my pocketbook, keys, and everything else.”
While standing at her checkout and assisting customers to safety outside the store, a Kroger clerk told reporters she heard gunshots near the deli. The shooter followed them through the store, she claimed, until police came.
The cashier, who did not want to be recognized, told WMC, “I said ‘Oh, no,’ these are gunshots.” “I ran out of there, grabbed whoever was in front of me, and just bolted.”
The survivors’ injuries were characterized as “quite critical” by Lane.
Lane described the situation as “horrific.” “I’ve worked in this industry for 34 years and have never seen anything like it.”
The Kroger supermarket is fewer than three miles from Collierville High School. According to WMC, students hid in position until police arrived to secure the gunshot site.

“We are extremely sorry by the incident,” Kroger stated in a statement to various news sites.
“During this terrible time, the whole Kroger family sends its thoughts, prayers, and support to the victims and their families. According to the statement, “we are collaborating with local law police, who have secured the store and parking lot.” “While the police investigation is ongoing, the store will stay closed, and we have begun counseling services for our employees.”
