Linktober Day 19: Phantom/Ghosts
As Link had started his adventure, he had been slightly confused. He was supposed to save the world, that much he had managed to get from the King’s explanation.
But every time he wandered too close to ruins of a village, or an empty cabin situation in remote locations that that tended to be crawling with monsters, he felt slight breezes.
At first, he could just wave them off as breezes. Hyrule wasn’t exactly an indoor garden, after all. Most of the places Link visited were very windy and chilly, or rained a lot.
But then, even on clear sunny days, if he came too close to a burned down husk of a house, he felt a cold chill crawl up his spin, and he would retreat from it.
And then the whispers started.
It wasn’t much at first, just like the cold breezes. But sometimes, Link would swear that he heard people whispering, even though there were no people anywhere near him.
But he learned to live with it, sometimes even using the whispers to help him avoid larger enemies in his path as the voices whispered amongst themselves about how the monsters were growing stronger - most likely as a result of Link growing stronger.
And then he had defeated his first blight. Waterblight Ganon, releasing Mipha’s spirit. Instead of retiring to the afterlife, where she would be content to be peaceful and without worries, Mipha chose to stay with Link. He could see her ghostly form hovering around him (easier to see at nighttime), and she would become fully visible when she healed him.
Apparently, Link wasn’t supposed to see or hear her, as she had grew panicked when he had been caught staring at her in broad daylight. He explained how he heard whispers and felt cold breezes, and her smile fell, as she realized what he was experiencing.
“They are the spirits, ghosts, if you will, of the deceased.” She had explained to him. Link had grown thoughtful. Why was this?
He learned why he could hear the ghosts of the dead talking when he freed his second spirit.
It was Revali’s, and as he struck down Windblight, he saw Revali smile. Mipha had giggled, which surprised Revali as Link shouldn’t have been able to see her.
Mipha explained the situation, and at first, Revali had been rather standoffish, firmly denying that he had smiled at Link. As time passed on, Link freeing Daruk from Fireblight’s clutches, Revali explained the theory he had come up with.
“What I think is the problem, is the Shrine of Resurrection.” Revali had gathered the 2 spirits and one hero together to explain what he thought was happening.
Link tilted his head, but didn’t say anything. The Shrine of Resurrection had been untested technology, after all, and was bound to have a few side effects.
“It is, after all called the Shrine of Resurrection.” Revali placed more emphasis on the word resurrection as he gestured with his wings. “What I propose, is the idea of Link’s soul not fully being connected to his body.”
Link raised an eyebrow in confusion. Revali saw this, and sighed, placing his hand over his face.
“Do I really have to spell this out for you? I think that because you died, you can see other ghosts because the Shrine didn’t fully work.” He summed it up, giving an annoyed huff.
Link’s eyes widened. Was he still dead, then?
“And no, you’re not dead. Stop thinking that.” The Rito flicked his forehead with a finger (feather?) and sat back down. “I just think that your soul isn’t fully in tune with your body. Eventually, provided that you don’t die again, you should stop seeing and hearing ghosts.”
Link gave a panicked look to Revali. But the only friends he had made were ghosts, provided that they had already been his friends 100 years ago!
“Stop looking at me like that.” Revali turned away. “You’ll get used to it, and we’ll move on. It’s as simple as that.”
Link pouted, before signing out his words.
Then we better make the most of our time together, shouldn’t we?
Revali sighed in exasperation, before giving a barely noticible smirk.
“I guess we should.”
