Runaway - Part I
“She’s gotta go, Boss. The broad knows too much and I says we can’t trusts her ta keep her trap closed.” Ruby’s eye widened, peeking through the crack in the door of a hidden room built into the back of the shack. “I tolds yas ta keep her busy!” A green hand lifted to scratch his head, “We tried boss, but ya knows Ruby. She can’t keep her nose outta nuttin.” Pink hair beneath a black hat suddenly blocked the gnome’s view, causing her to topple backwards making a racket. “Ay! Who’s out there?!” was shouted from inside the shack. Ruby jumped up with her eye wide and took off with her feet stumbling over what felt like every board along the docks of the bay. “It’s Ruby, boss!” The gnome sat at his desk with his feet propped up on the desk, knocking over a couple of stacks of gold coins, “Get rid ov her.” Six sets of feet hustled to make it after the gnome, “And it betta not be messy!” The door slammed shut, “You got it, boss!” Gripping his cigar between his teeth the boss mumbled, “We coulda been togethah forevah, but yas juss couldn’t let it rest, could yas?” The gnome coughed a bit, snuffing out his cigar in a heavy ashtray and downed the rest of his whiskey. He exhaled a satisfied breath as the amber liquid burned his throat and mumbled, “I’m gonna miss ya, toots.”
Ruby ran to her mechanostrider as fast as her short legs could carry her. Shouting could be heard as the group trailed close behind her on foot, “Ruby, yas get back here! We ain’t gonna hurts ya, we promise!” She wasted not another moment and cranked over the engine of her mechanical ride with smoke belching out of the exhaust pipes.
The gnome tossed her eye patch off, leaving it on the trail. She was out of sight by the time the made it out of Booty Bay. A green hand gripped the eye patch and the goblin barked out an order, “Find her befores the boss has all our heads for this.” He narrowed his eyes as the crew hoped on their trikes and took off, watching the glowing taillights vanish in the dust.
