SHWI Dining Club at the Showroom...Tudor Style
Our esteemed Dining Club organisers, Laura and Anna leapt at the Showroom's offer to create a bespoke foodie night with the theme of our choice. A historical theme was just what we wanted and just what no other eaterie could do for us.
If you're not au fait with Sheffield, the Showroom is the city's only independent city with a nice bar and cafe. The standard on offer has changed periodically since I've lived here, but I did have a great 21st birthday in the cafe with nice canapes and a great atmosphere. Recently, Simon Ayres, previously of The Milestone has taken over their food venture and we'd heard great things. A vegetable garden has started on the roof and even their own ice cream being produced on the premises. But nothing we'd heard could have prepared us for the great night we were to have.
We'd been tempted with the four-course menu being posted on the event wall with a choice for meat-eaters or pescatarians. But what we didn't realise was this wasn't going to be a choice - but a full-blown banquest of all options being presented on platters. Amazing news for us gluttons!
The menu was as follows (written on yellowed Tudor scrolls) :
Smoked mackerel & goats cheese tart
Roast Tongue, corned beef & kidney puddings
Food for the poor - Pottage, honey, cheese and bread
Rabbit posh pastry, rabbit loin, swede fondant & rabbit cutlet
Poor knight's pudding with rose water
Tarte of strawberries with cream
The meal was incredible. We weren't expecting the sheer amount of food and it all tasted amazing. The cheese, honey and pottage was delicious but I ate too much too early! At a special deal of £20, a great night and good value was had by all.
