Growing up in Colorado, it wasn't unusual for Ashley Rankin to play in the dirt with crimped hair and carefully paired outfits- She never saw a reason to sacrifice style for functionality. An avid mountain biker, she found herself wondering over the years why there wasn't any women's mountain biking apparel that allowed her to play hard and look great too. So she founded Shredly, a multi-sport line of women's apparel infused with vibrant designs and innovative functionality, to help women Look good. Feel good. Shred good. When she started using Kit to keep in touch with her customers, we couldn't wait to get in touch with her and hear more!
What’s the most rewarding part of running Shredly?
"The most rewarding is hearing the rave reviews about all aspects of the product- from fit to the pattern selections, snaps and etc. Every detail was really important to me in creating the product and received equal amounts of attention. To hear that women are noticing those details and appreciating them is very rewarding!"
Okay, so what’s the most difficult part?
"The hardest part of running my own business is finding a balance between my life and my business. Right now my business is my life and I love it but I am realizing how important it is to find a balance and be careful not to sacrifice my health or overall wellbeing. For example, sleep: I used to think it was overrated but it catches up to you and makes even mundane tasks seem insurmountable when you get really far behind on the Z's!"
When I look at your social pages I see a lot of positive engagement from fans. How have you managed to cultivate such a great online presence for your brand?
"I am not sure, but I am very grateful for it! I think that nowadays with social media being such a big part of all of our lives, if you put something good out there it snowballs quickly. And I think that can work against you too – if you put something bad out there everyone will know about it in no time! I also think that since SHREDLY is so unique, it gets a lot of attention and credit for that. People are excited to share what they’ve discovered!"
How has customer feedback and engagement helped your brand to evolve? How are you responding and adapting to what you learn about your customers? How does Kit tie into that?
"When you commit to creating a product for a specific niche part of providing the BEST product is listening to your customers about what they like and don’t like. Of course it is difficult as a small business to accommodate everyone, but if you are hearing the same feedback over and over you know it’s likely a change that should be made. I welcome feedback good and bad – I want to keep improving everything year after year. When women realize that you are actually listening to them and care what they think it creates a special kind of customer relationship. I have some women who I’ve become quite fond of simply because I listened to their feedback and from the communication back and forth I would almost say they’re friends and advocates of the brand opposed to just customers. Kit plays into this because it allows me to identify women who are already actively engaged and target them as great resources for product feedback and development."
In a recent interview with women’s adventure you said you’ve been asking yourself “what else can I create to make people even more stoked to go in the outdoors?”Any winning ideas in the pipeline?
"Yes! But if I told you then I would have to…
Not really! but I have a few things up my sleeve that will come out in the next few years and I think women will be pleasantly surprised while never expecting these products!"
You have had so much positive press over the years! are there any questions left that are worth asking you, that haven’t already been asked?
"I feel very lucky and am grateful for great press! I think the one question no one has asked yet is “Was it worth it?” I’ve given SHREDLY my all, I’ve missed out on a lot of fun, had too many sleepless nights and invested everything I own into SHREDLY. The answer? Yes. With high risk you have high reward and feeling a sense of accomplishment is the best reward!"
