Shrimp Fishers at Saint-Georges
Artist: Rupert Bunny (Australian, 1864-1947
Date: c. 1910
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia
Description
Rupert Bunny was one of the most successful Australians of his generation. In an era when artists were increasingly drawn to the vibrant cultural atmosphere of Europe, no other painter achieved the accolades Bunny accumulated in Paris in the 1890s and early 1900s. Shrimp fishers at Saint-George depicts holiday-makers at the fashionable resort of Saint-Georges de Didonne, on the Atlantic coast. In such images of predominantly female figures engaged in leisurely pursuits, Bunny captured the elegance of the Edwardian age that was shattered by the outbreak of the First World War.
