How do you assess whether a criminal's state of mind makes him not in control of their actions and unable to stand trial, or getting them help, etc.

This depends entirely on the jurisdiction your story’s set in. Even different states within the US have quite different standards and procedures.

Children and adults often display different symptoms... Is there a general age range where that shift from "child's brain" to "adult's brain" is most pronounced? or is it too gradual to pin down? Because society sort of picks an arbitrary point (18 years) as the definition of "adulthood" but that doesn't necessarily reflect someone's actual maturity... My question is this: Do the shifts happen around puberty (teens)? Or adulthood (twenties)? Or does it vary by person? (My OC is 16/17)

Developmental psych is not the Shrink’s forte, but it’s my understanding that this is a fairly heated topic. There are different theories of child development that emphasize their own stages / age ranges, so there’s no definitive answer, sorry!

Saying you want tips for writing a “mentally insane character” is like asking for tips writing a “medically sick character”. It’s so broad that I am unable to help you.

And I’m not trying to be salty, but the trope of mental illness meaning that you’re a homicidal murderer needs to die in a fire. People who are mentally ill are by far more likely to be a victim of violence than a perpetrator - and committing murder (even for seemingly strange reasons) does does not require being mentally ill.

Salt aside, I’m really, really glad you want to get this right! You just have a long way to go as of now.

If someone was to be shot in the leg it is going to be obvious that you won’t be able to walk, but how long does it take to recover a bullet to the leg? (That is if the bullet went through the bone)

(I’m sorry if this seems weird) but let’s say a person was shot in the chest how long would t take them to die. I’ve done a little research and from some of my knowledge, it depends where you where shot. How long would it take to die from blood loss (I’m talking about minuets if possible)

Hi there! I have a character who gets beaten to death accidentally during a fight (the main cause of death is related to his head hitting the concrete). His body gets dumped in a lake and is eventually found after two weeks. This happens during the cooler months, so I'm assuming he'll be less decomposed due to grave wax, but I'd appreciate any advice on what his corpse would look like by the time it's recovered. Hello! Let's say a 20 y.o character died and got reincarnated (with his full consciousness and memories) as a baby. Would he age mentally too? As in, if his body was 10 y.o, does this mean that he's mentally 30? And what would be the drawbacks of his situation?

I hate to burst your bubble, but this falls firmly into the realm of breaking Aunt Scripty’s rule of reality.

Memories and consciousness are linked to the physical structures of the brain. Babies’ heads are simply not capable of holding all the information stored in the adult brain.

That’s not to say you can’t write your story the way you want to; just be aware that you can’t base this part on reality.
