It does make perfect sense that Jace would refer to Alec as his "brother" though.

What else was he supposed to say?

"I need to get to the person I love more than anyone else in the world? The one person in the world I cannot live without? The one person in the world who, if he dies, will just take me along with him? The person who shares part of my soul? The person I am bonded with in a way neither one of us will ever be bonded with anyone else?"

Sure, he could have said "parabatai". But I doubt anyone at the hospital would have understood the significance of that. And neither would the werewolves, probably. So there.
