In the fall of 1998 I stumbled on the previous year’s soundtrack to the Giovanni Ribisi starred film First Love, Last Rites in a Springfield, MO CD Warehouse clearance bin. (it was - the above graphics - an early promotional* release to the final, “official” design. Note its orange jewel case as well, how I do miss compact disc gimmicks.) The currents of my love for all things Jeff Buckley rushed rabid that fall, pointing me to his guest vocal appearance (in a not-so-easy-access age) on Shudder to Think’s compositions for director Jesse Peretz’s first feature. I love the short essay from the band on the back of the CD (above blurry image).
Needless to say, I ate up the late Buckley’s soulful contribution, I Want Someone Badly. Then, devoured the rest of its generous and accomplished 15 tracks, nearly all with vocals shared from a who’s who of talent. Each selection a fresh and unique gem at the Shudder to Think & Friends Buffet. It’s really quite timeless and special, soon becoming one of my favorite soundtracks. It’s nothing short of an old reliable I came to pull from the shelf like a comfortable jacket. It continues to find endless inspiration and nostalgic time tripping within me.
Friends and I rented a VHS of the film sometime in 1999 (I, uh, shudder to think?) and it truly didn’t fully stick like the tunes. In fact, I recall it a disappointing affair. You’d think I’d have a better connection as I recall there was a lot of secluded downtime spent spinning records in a cool house on stilts. In all fairness, I could use a refresher as twenty years ago I was still naive navigating the independent film selection at Blockbuster. Still am. Though, I’m quite happy with my CD Warehouse find of one of the great soundtracks of the 1990s.

*I have rescued (and been resold) many CDs from bins with the above stamp.
Last night @craigwedren constructed and then deconstructed looped dreamy improvised vocals @houndstoothcottage (a friend's house) and it was #bliss #craigwedren #shuddertothink #90smusic #dronemusic #ambientmusic #alternativemusic #120minutes #velvetgoldmine #lollapalooza94 (at Westchester, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqkCvM7neXk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=enyjhwl2me2i

I listened to the only Cursive record I like. I still like it. A lot. These are ALL killer. Not a bit of filler to be found. #cursive #qandnotu #thedismembermentplan #tedleoandthepharmacists #shuddertothink #chavez #jawbox #lungfish #onelastwish
