One of the most widespread fairy-tale clichés is the damsel in distress. When the Mangoverse series starts, Queen Shulamit has plenty of things to be distressed about, including a lot of things that you don’t usually run into in a fantasy setting, such as lesbian invisibility and dietary ablism.
To date, she’s the only fantasy character I know of who has severe food allergies. They showed up when she was a teenager and provide a huge motivation for both her romantic subplot (with the beautiful chef who figures out how to keep her from throwing up and starving to death) and her deep platonic friendship with her lady warrior bodyguard, who was the first person to believe her about her sickness besides the chef.
In a society whose science hasn’t evolved to explain food allergies and intolerances, and where, just like in our own, a teenage girl’s statements about herself are taken to be inauthentic grabs for attention, nobody listened to Shulamit when she started getting sick. Once poison and witchcraft were ruled out, they just assumed she was being prissy.
She had to learn to take charge of her diet and always be assertive and vigilant in her own defense. As the series progresses, readers watch her adjust to her restrictions (gluten and poultry) and stand up for herself. She doesn’t have to get sick anymore, but she’s never “cured” and will have to watch out for stray bread or accidental chicken for the rest of her life. Luckily, she’s royalty, and has a chef for a girlfriend.
Shulamit is the main character in The Second Mango and Climbing the Date Palm, available from Prizm Books, and A Harvest of Ripe Figs, due out January 2015.
