What About Shumpy?
As the NBA season comes to a close, the league's annual awards are beginning to be distributed. One is the Rookie of the Year award which, clearly, is awarded to the top rookie who has exhibited the most talent throughout the season. While last year's number one draft pick Kyrie Irving is leading the pack for those who have a vote, I'm confused as to why the Knicks' Iman Shumpert isn't even in the conversation. Yea, I know, I may be biased, but let's look at the facts.
Shumpy (yes, I gave him a nickname- so what??) has been an integral part of a team that's been dysfunctional as hell throughout the season. Few rookies would have been able to consistently play well in that kind of environment. He's managed to be a breakout, valuable player on a team with veterans, a few NBA heavyweights and an overnight phenomenon. They've had games where Shumpy's on the ball defense (which is stellar) has helped them win, he's scored when they needed him to and taken the backseat when necessary. He has the most steals (100), is top ten in points per game and has the 7th most assists of all rookies this season.
Listen, I'm not saying give him the award outright, but can we at least discuss my man Shump? He's done whatever the Knicks have needed him to during a very tumultuous season all while remaining consistent (and adorable!). That's big, give the man some credit.
