"Yu Yu Hakusho 100% Maji Battle" Kurama Event

This event about Kurama's past was first held on August 8th, 2019. I guess this is the closest we'll ever get to reading a story about Shunjun VS Youko Kurama.

Story: Kurama's true identity is that of a Youko (demon fox) with spirit powers. He used to break seals and codes to commit theft. However, an excellent Spirit World hunter couldn't ignore a youkai like him...

Youko (demon fox) - it's a fox that has lived for hundreds of years, becoming a beast youkai with spirit powers.

T/N: Youjuu (妖獣), beast youkai, are animals that have become youkai. They are known for possessing a lot of power and wisdom.

Kurama's specialty was once stealing ancient treasures by cracking seals and codes.

15 years ago, he left the Demon World and landed in the Human World...

T/N: In the manga, Yomi says Kurama left the Demon World and shifted his base of operations to the Human World a thousand years ago, as soon as he realized Mukuro and Raizen's forces were consolidating. He was injured by Shunjun 15 years ago. I wish his story were better told.

Day after day, he stole more and more. He can break seals and crack codes by himself.

Stealing and the like is easy for him. Acting secretly, he has spent his days stealing all the treasures.

However, someone who is trying to finish him off is on the move.

Shunjun: Damn, is this the work of Youko again? What the heck, how many times has this happened?

Shunjun: ...Hmm? This is ... did he break the seal by himself?

Shunjun: Good grief, what a miserable monster fox! As soon as I find him, I'll get rid of him with my own hands.

Shunjun: Swagger around and run rampant, while you still can.

He is an excellent Spirit World Hunter. In order to stop the thefts, he frantically searched for Youko.

Unsettling footsteps resound at Youko's location.

[Inside a building...]

Youko: .....

*rustle* *rustle* (Youko making noises, trying to solve the cipher)

Unusually, Youko was having a hard time cracking the code. He was feeling annoyed because things were not going well.

*rattle*! (Youko making noises)

Shunjun: After trying to follow a suspicious youki … I hear noises! If my hunch is right, I guess it's him.

Shunjun: Today is the day I'll kill him!

The Spirit World Hunter was desperate to capture Youko. However, Youko also knew that he had a pursuer. 

In a tense atmosphere, the two unexpectedly meet.

What fate awaits them hereafter? Neither of them had any way of knowing...

[The encounter between Shunjun and Youko Kurama]

Youko: !

*whack*! (Shunjun attacks Youko)

Youko: Argh!

Shunjun: I found you ... you monster fox! Were you so preoccupied with the code, you didn't notice my existence?

Shunjun: The treasures stolen so far, return them all!

Youko: .....

Shunjun: Hey, wait!

[Shunjun pursues Youko outside the building...]

Shunjun: Wait, today you won't escape!

*whack*! *whack*! (Shunjun attacks Youko)

Youko: Agghh!

Shunjun: He's a tough bastard! I can't believe he can still run, after receiving this blow...

Shunjun: You're finished! Die!

*kaboom*!! (bigger attack)

Shunjun: Haha ... I did it, finally! Finally… he is...

Shunjun: Huh!?

Shunjun: No, he's not here!? What the hell?

Shunjun: Damn, daaaaaaaamn!!

Just in the nick of time, Youko summoned his last strength. In his spirit form, he fled into the Human World.

In order to recover his demon power, worn out by the hunter's attack, he descends into the Human World and lives as the child of a married couple.

There, Kurama learned a lot about love and affection. He even wanted to retribute his parents for raising him.  

More than 10 years have already passed since the lone youkai was named Shuichi Minamino...

[At the hospital]

Kurama: Mom, did you have a proper meal today?

Shiori: I ate a little bit.

Kurama: If you don't eat well, you won't get better.

Shiori: Yes, yes, Shuuichi is a worrier.

Kurama: Well, I'll come back tomorrow. 

*tap tap tap* (sound of footsteps, Kurama leaves Shiori's room and goes to the roof terrace)

[At the Hospital's Terrace]

Kurama: It's been 15 years since I arrived in the Human World ... Thus, I am living a happy life now.

Kurama: But, such a time will soon come to an end.

Kurama: If this cures my mother's disease...

After obtaining the dark mirror (forlorn hope), he meets Yusuke, who has become a spirit detective.

Once again, it will be an encounter that will greatly change Kurama's fate.

I wish Togashi had drawn the confront between Youko and Shunjun. If what Yomi said is correct, and Youko left to the Human World a thousand years ago when the barrier hadn't been lifted yet, I guess the Spirit World spent a lot of time trying to catch him. But, I'm glad Maji Battle tried to tell this story. It's funny that Youko in his fox form can't talk, reminds me of the tanuki (racoon) Yusuke met in the early chapters of the manga.

Shunjun ended up becoming a fine hunter, and also helped the guys in their last mission (All or Nothing).

It would also be interesting to read the event "Over 10 Years". Kurama looks back on events of his life that don't appear in the anime. For example, the day of Shuuichi Minamino's birth at the hospital, lines from his biological father, conversations with his mother and Maya, etc.

This is Shunjun; the main responsible for “killing” Yoko Kurama and forcing his spirit to inhabit Shuichi Minamino. Or so he brags.

"Yu Yu Hakusho 100% Maji Battle" Special Defense Force – SDF Event

This event was first held on November 16, 2020. It is a short story about the Spirit World SDF, led by Captain Otake. Shunjun also remembers the day he hunted Youko Kurama.

Emergency! 

Please, dispatch the "Spirit World Special Defense Force" immediately. I repeat.

Please, dispatch the "Spirit World Special Defense Force" immediately.

The "Spirit World Special Defense Force" is feared and commonly known as hunters among youkai.

Their primary mission is to patrol the portion of the Demon World managed by the Spirit World, and to exterminate youkai in order to expand the area under their control.

Otake: Let's go! 

SDF: Aye! 

[At the Demon World]

Otake: One B-class youkai has escaped ... Shunjun, Ryouhi, chase them! The rest of you, exterminate the remnants. 

Shunjun: Captain, I can handle one B-class youkai myself. 

Otake: Shunjun, those guys are desperate. Regardless of appearance, they may act unexpectedly. 

[Flashback] 

Shunjun's memories are from when he hunted down the A-class Youko Kurama, and our beloved demon fox surprised him. It was an unexpected turn of events. Check the Maji Battle event: "A Past Dyed in Silver".

Shunjun: You're finished! Die! 

*kaboom*!! (Shunjun attacks Youko)

Shunjun: Haha … I did it, finally! Finally… he is… 

Shunjun: Huh!? 

Shunjun: No, he's not here!? What the hell? 

Shunjun: Damn, daaaaaaaamn!!

Shunjun: Ha... 

Otake: Seems like you remembered something and understood my point. Always be cautious, and think before you act. 

Otake: Today's mission is to exterminate every last youkai in this area. Go! 

Shunjun and Ryouhi: Understood! 

Led by captain Otake, each one possesses high spirit powers. They are the elite warriors of the Spirit World who are able to go toe-to-toe with even A-class youkai.

With that pride in mind, they are still throwing themselves into battles to this day.

Captain Ootake seemed such a fine captain. I can't believe he quit the SDF and joined the Spirit World terrorists.😂

I wish we knew more about the other members.

It is hard to believe that Toguro was just an upper B-class youkai, and any of the SDF members could have handled him. But, I guess he never posed a threat to the Human World, he just wanted to fight at the Dark Tournament.

Yusuke: "I’ve bumped into my creator, Togashi-sensei, and asked him the questions everyone wants to know about "Yu☆Yu☆". Here they are!!"

Q1. Is the hunter who chased Youko Kurama down from the Spirit World Special Defense Force - S.D.F?

A: That's right. It’s the "Special Defense Force" that came out in JUMP Nº2. There are nine members in the Special Defense Force, including Captain Otake, and one of them inflicted a serious wound on Youko Kurama fifteen years ago. That's...a secret...well, I wonder who he is?

T/N: Togashi was ironic at the end of his answer (I wonder who the guys is) and he probably didn’t want to give spoilers. In Chapter 149 ("Mano a Mano Again"), published in the previous issue of the magazine (WSJ N°2, 1994), Shunjun is bragging about how the S.D.F. can handle even A-class youkai. Then, Rinbai (dark-violet hair) brings up that he was tired of hearing Shunjun’s story about the day he pounced on Youko.

Q2. Who is the lady in black kimono who works under Koemma's command?

A: Her name is "Ayame" and she is Botan's junior (*kohai). Does she look a little older than Botan? For the time being, she’s still studying, so she’s active in the Spirit World working with focus on investigations.

T/N: In Japan, there’s the senpai-kohai (senior-junior) system. While senpai (先輩) means an upperclassman, senior employee or an older person, kohai (後輩) is the junior or lower person. Senpai-kohai is determined by age and rank. It’s funny, because I always thought Ayame was older than Botan. Even Togashi mentions she looks older.

Q3. Did Hiei really not know janken (rock-paper-scissors)?

A: Hmm...maybe he remembered the word "rock-paper-scissors" at the time of volume 7, but forgot it by volume 10...? Kuwabara also takes off his hat to Hiei, saying that “he's no ordinary guy”.

T/N:

- “He's no ordinary guy” are Kuwabara’s words to Hiei from volume 10. Kuwabara acknowledges Hiei’s abilities when he, who had never played janken before, realizes that Kuwabara was cheating at jaken.

- I explained the janken story here. In short, Hiei mentioned the janken game in volume 7, but had no idea what it was in volume 10. Togashi apologized for the mistake in a WSJ Table of Contents (the anime and some overseas editions of the manga fixed his line from volume 7).

Q4. Did Hagiri and Amanuma die!?

A: Please, take a closer look at "Yu Yu Hakusho" chapter in Jump Nº49, 1993 (Ch.144 "Unstoppable!!"). In fact, Amanuma is present in a certain scene. Fufufu, which scene is it?...Which means that Hagiri is... also?

T/N: Chapter 150 "An Unparalleled Battle!!" came out when this Q&A was published in JUMP N°3-4, 1994. Yusuke had just arrived in the Demon World to fight Sensui, so people still didn’t know what had happened with Amanuma and Kaname. That’s the reason of this question. But, if you take a closer look at chapter 144, you can spot Amanuma standing behind Botan and the others, almost hidden behind a balloon. However, we only learned that Koenma used the mafuukan to save him a few chapters later.

Q5. What was the other opponent on whom Koenma used the "mafuukan” in the past?

A: Let's have the person himself to answer this question.

Koenma: "Wooow, I forgot. It was certainly against a youkai, I think...Don't blame me. If you live for hundreds of years, this can happen!"

Q6. Please tell us more about the first Spirit World detective.

A: Her name is Kuroko Sanada. She is a descendant of onmyoji who performed spells. She worked as a Spirit World detective for six years, solving more than ten cases, but retired when she got married. She is now mother of two children. Occasionally, demons will bother her, but she says her two children will get rid of them...

Q7. Is Kurama going to tell Kuwabara the name of Hiei's younger sister?

A: This is also a question to the person himself...

Kurama: "Such an funny thing...there’s no way I could tell him, right? It’s obvious. I’m going to delay it. Nihihi”.

A: That's right. It’s the “Special Defense Force” that came out in JUMP No 2. There are nine members in the squadron, including captain Otake, and one of them, 15 years ago,  inflicted a deep wound on Kurama Youko. It's...a secret... well, who might be this guy? In this chapter, Shunjun was revealed as the one who injured Youko.

That's an adorable idea, though! I love that it expands on The Dark Tournament, too; there is a lot of potential outside the arena, especially in Koenma's character since they didn't do too much with him, at least at the point where I am. I love little side character fics like that. :)

I know right? The idea came to me over the summer after I was done watching the Dark Tournament during the YYH rewatch event. Like you, I kind of thought about the potential of what can happen outside the ring and then my Koenma singing talent headcanon somehow wedged it’s way in. I also thought that after the Dark Tournament thing, Koenma becomes a masked pop/rock singer (secretly to hide his true identity and plus he would be in his adult form) during the 3 Kings arc that extends post series. As like a singer, he becomes the lead singer of his own grunge/alternative band that consists of him (singer/songwriter), Jorge (bass player and music composer because, I have always thought Jorge would be a good bass player and composer), the blue haired SDF guy with the earrings (Shunjun I think his name is) on drums/percussion, and his old classmate/friend Koashura (the little punk that tried to kill him in the Golden Seal short) on guitar and head-bangs to the music which annoys Koenma to no end (after him and Koenma finally come to a truce and he has an adult body like Koenma does except he has long red hair).

I also thought that their band sings songs about love, relationships, and about the corruption that’s going on Spirit World (mainly as secret messages) even though those ones would only appear as stories to the listeners. Nobody would really suspect that the band is made up of people from the Spirit World (unless you’re Yusuke, Kuwabara, or someone who was/is involved with Team Urameshi). Also, Koenma, Jorge, Koashura, and Shunjun would be using aliases to cover up their true identities to keep themselves from being caught because, if someone were to figure out the secret messages in some of their songs, their punishments would be so severe. It’s still a working progress because, I am going to include an OC of mine in there as well and there are still some tweaks to work out (like their fake names and their band name).
