Shurijo, Shuri, Okinawa, Japan,
Shuri Castle (首里城 Shuri-jō, Okinawan: Sui Gushiku) is a Ryukyuan gusuku in Shuri, Okinawa.
Between 1429 and 1879, it was the palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom, before becoming largely neglected.
In 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, it was almost completely destroyed. After the war, the castle was re-purposed as a university campus. Beginning in 1992, the central citadel and walls were largely reconstructed on the original site based on historical records, photographs, and memory.
On the morning of 31 October 2019, however, the main courtyard structures of the castle were destroyed in a fire.

For anybody wanting to support Shuri Castle restoration, there’s a GoFundMe that was started by the Hawaii United Okinawa Association for Okinawa and Shuri Castle.
I'm raising money to benefit the Shuri Castle Restoration efforts after a major fire on the morning of October 31, 2019, one day after celebrating the Worldwide Uchinanchu Day. Any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me and so many around the world who have visited this historical site.

Shuri Castle near Naha, Okinawa is probably one of The Best castles I’ve been to in Japan, and I’ve been to a few. Because of its Chinese influence (which is pretty overt from the entrance - it was exactly how I imagine the Forbidden City to look, and I learned later the structure was in fact thusly inspired) it’s a lot more sprawling and fortified than the castles I’m used to seeing. The view is great, and I really dig the shisa - I loved the ones decorated with pineapples! Also inside the castle is a small cafe where you get a little plate of Okinawan snacks and some of the local jasmine tea, totally worth the extra ¥350!
