Shuttle Enterprise conducting fit checks at SLC-6, Vandenberg

I actually attended the World's Fair in New Orleans in 1984 and remember vividly how impressive it was to see this man-made wonder.

NASA Image: The space shuttle Enterprise after its 1984 arrival in New Orleans. A NASA web site recalls the obstacles involved in the shuttle's 1984 trip to the World's Fair site in New Orleans, namely how on Earth to get the spaceship to the riverfront in one piece. "Every now and then, when you work for NASA, you might become involved in an assignment that is a little unusual compared to your normal duties," recalled NASA swing arm engineer Ken Fore. "Such an opportunity became available to me during my career when NASA decided to put the Orbiter Enterprise on display at the fair." The Enterprise, which never made it into space, was used to demonstrate the ability of orbiters to maneuver and land after reentering the Earth's atmosphere. After the shuttle fleet started flying actual missions, the Enterprise was retired to public relations duties, including the six months on display in New Orleans. "That's when the fun part started," Fore recalled on the NASA web site, "trying to figure out how to get a 165,000-pound, 122-foot-long Shuttle Orbiter with a 78-foot wing span to downtown New Orleans and place it on a display at the World's Fair." NASA decided a trip by barge was the best solution.
