Now that Wattpad is banning smut and all the Wattpad warriors are gonna come over to AO3, I think we need to set some ground rules. Wattpad culture and AO3 culture are very different, and as someone who's experienced both, I do think it's necessary to educate people on AO3 culture so...
Don't like, don't read. It's not the author's job to write a fic based on what you're into.
Leave kudos (and comments). AO3 culture is all about encouraging the authors to keep going, so if you're enjoying a fic, show it some love!
READ THE TAGS! Dead dove, do not eat. If the fic is tagged correctly, you shouldn't get any nasty surprises as long as you read the tags.
Use exclusion and inclusion filters. If there's something specific you do or don't want to see, you can edit your search and exclude/include certain tags! It truly is a joyous place...
If you're writing fics, PLEASE tag correctly. If you want a separate post detailing how to tag your fics, I can make one, but it's mostly just common sense. Don't use unrelated tags, make sure you include all the warnings etc.
Educate yourself on what the four boxes in the top corner of a fic mean (maturity rating, ships, archive warnings, completion). This is less fandom etiquette and more just FYI, it makes it easier when browsing for fics.
Don't report anything just because you don't like it. It's an ARCHIVE, which means anything and everything is allowed on the site, as long as it is fandom-related. (Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think original works can be published there...?) This links to point no. 1, but if you see something you dont like, just don't read the fic.
Beware of the ao3 curse before you start writing anything...
This is less ao3 culture and just a heads up, but there is no official ao3 app. The one you can install on your devices is not made by the developers and has ads, so stay on the website, it's better.
If anyone has anything else for new users to note, please feel free to add it!
